In the chill of winter, when temperatures in Kennewick, Washington, can drop as low as two degrees, one bus driver took it upon himself to ensure that the children on his route stayed warm. After witnessing a young boy board his bus visibly shivering and in tears, Jack Peterson, a devoted bus driver and U.S. Army veteran, was inspired to act.
During his third year of driving for the local school district, Peterson noticed the boy’s hands and ears were red from the cold. “I gave him my gloves and reassured him that it would be alright,” Peterson recounted in a post shared by the school district. Unable to shake the image of the boy’s discomfort, Peterson made a quick stop at a nearby dollar store and purchased ten hats and gloves in both black and pink.
“I’m a grandfather myself, and I couldn’t bear to think of a child suffering like that,” Peterson remarked. With the help of school administrators, he was able to track down the boy in the library, where he handed him the warm gear. “When I told the kids that if they were on my route and needed cold weather supplies, I had them covered, a little girl chimed in, saying she didn’t have a hat. I told her, ‘I’ll take care of you, sweetheart,’” he shared.
The school district shared Peterson’s story and photo on social media, leading to an outpouring of support and admiration. “Thank you for your continued service, Mr. Peterson,” one commenter wrote. The positive response was so overwhelming that the district included information on how others could contribute to assist the students in need. “If everyone looked out for one another like this man, the world would be so different,” another user commented.
