When you first become a parent, there’s a lot of effort that goes into avoiding situations where you have to wrangle a squirming infant into a car seat. You find yourself crafting excuses to skip playdates and saying a firm “no” to errands with a toddler wailing from the backseat about a lost toy or some other minor crisis.
In those early years, you can often manage grocery runs every few weeks and occasional playdates with understanding moms who overlook the fact that your workout attire is adorned with traces of baby mess. But as soon as your little ones start school and dive into various extracurriculars, everything changes. Suddenly, your calendar resembles a high-stakes battlefield, and you spend your evenings strategizing the next day’s activities like a general preparing for battle. Despite your meticulous planning, something inevitably gets overlooked.
With the constant push for kids to participate in numerous activities, moms often feel like they’re stuck on a hamster wheel inside a minivan, racing from one commitment to another. I remember grappling with the pressure to be omnipresent. I broke speed limits as I dashed between soccer practices and dance recitals, often with my kids dining on the go in the backseat. There were days I felt like my car had transformed into my second home—always in motion.
However, a few years back, when my children outgrew their car seats, I discovered a game changer: the carpool.
