You’ve probably encountered our posts on social media. You may have received invites to our gatherings, and perhaps you feel a sense of dread when a message from us pops up in your inbox. We are the MLM doctors that people tend to resent.
I completely understand the animosity directed towards those of us involved in multi-level marketing. The stereotypes exist for a reason, and yes, they can be incredibly frustrating. Depending on our chosen model, we might add you to groups without prior consent or send friend requests to your neighbor’s cousin to expand our reach. Our social media feeds often seem flooded with stock images and memes promoting our latest products.
I get it. We can be exasperating—truly.
However, many of us engage in MLM for various reasons, none of which aim to make you unfriend us or turn you against us.
For some, MLM represents a path to creating the life we desire. While it may appear that we’re merely trying to sell you things you don’t need, to us, it symbolizes the possibility of a brighter future. Sure, the odds of striking it rich are slim, but in our reality, every little bit counts.
Others participate in MLM simply to claim something as their own. We often pour our time and energy into our families, losing touch with our own identities. These business ventures allow us to reconnect with ourselves, reminding us that we are more than just caregivers.
Some of us aim to teach our children that there are diverse ways to earn a living. We don’t have to stick to a traditional 9-to-5 job that we dislike for decades before retiring. We want to show them that you can work from home, travel while working, or even become an entrepreneur. The options are limitless. What matters is illustrating that the journey to financial success is not one-size-fits-all.
I genuinely hope that those in your social media circles engaged in these pursuits respect your time and boundaries. I hope they accept your “no” graciously and refrain from holding any grudges. I hope they seek your permission before adding you to yet another group without your approval. And even though their pages may resemble infomercials, I hope you can see the passion behind their constant postings and understand they are pursuing something meaningful to them, just as you are.

In summary, while the world of MLM can be off-putting, it’s essential to recognize the motivations behind it. Many of us are simply trying to carve out a space for ourselves, explore new opportunities, and instill diverse work ethics in our children.
