When the day winds down, and if we’re not completely worn out, we might curl up on the couch to watch a show together. By “curl up,” I mean we sit on different sofas in the same room, exchanging meaningful glances when one of us wants popcorn. So yes, it’s all sunshine and rainbows here. But you know what truly elevates the bliss? Those rare evenings when he’s away for work. That’s right—I actually cherish my husband even more when he’s not around. It turns out I’m not alone in this sentiment. A recent study in the journal Social Forces indicates that wives report a boost in their quality of life when their husbands spend more time at the office. Remember, happy wife, happy life, right? It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Here are five reasons why, despite my love for my husband, I also relish a solo night:
- A Bed Just for Me
Oh, those classic TV couples had the right idea with their separate beds! No more heavy limbs draped over me, no tussles over blankets or temperature settings. It’s just me, sprawled out diagonally amidst fluffy pillows, enjoying the perfect 69-degree air (yes, those two degrees truly matter). And, most importantly, there’s no lingering odor of last week’s takeout. Sometimes, a breath of fresh air is all you need! - Timely Bedtime Routines
When it’s just me and the kids, “time to wash up” doesn’t morph into “let’s go play catch” or “who wants a snack?” Instead, it means brushing teeth, washing faces, and settling into bed—ideally by 8:30 p.m. (though I aim for 8!). Even flying solo, I sometimes struggle to hit that target, but I come much closer without distractions. - Breakfast for Dinner
Forget about heavy meals! My boys are thrilled with simple delights like eggs and toast or cereal and fruit. It’s quick, easy, and delicious. And let’s not forget the best part—ice cream for dessert! What’s not to love? - Binge-Watching My Shows
Unless we’re having one of those “quality” evenings together, our main TV is typically tuned to sports. And even if I sneak off to catch a more thought-provoking show, he always seems to come in (as if he owns the remote!). Before I know it, I’m stuck watching yet another game, which I’m not exactly thrilled about. - Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Being apart allows me to appreciate my husband even more when he returns. It’s the little things that remind me why we fell in love in the first place.
So, when’s the next business trip, dear?
