Just after the final presidential debate, a woman named Jenna Parker turned to Facebook to gather her friends in support of a female candidate. She extended an invitation to around 40 people to join a private group where they could share their stories and inspire one another to head to the polls on November 8. Before long, those initial members began inviting others, and in less than three weeks, the group exploded to nearly two million members. This community, known as Pantsuit Nation, has become a safe haven on the internet that requires referrals for entry. Trolls need not apply.
The group stands as a stark contrast to the negative political climate dominating social media. If Facebook could provide virtual hugs, they would be found here. It’s not an exaggeration to say that many members have declared their faith in the internet has been restored thanks to this supportive digital sanctuary.
In Pantsuit Nation, individuals share personal narratives they might hesitate to disclose to family or friends. The group is wonderfully diverse—yes, even Republicans are included! Members uplift each other, share experiences, and, of course, encourage everyone to wear their pantsuits to the polls.
The pantsuit itself symbolizes a commitment to substance over style and challenges long-standing cultural norms that dictate how female politicians are perceived based on their attire. As The Atlantic noted, “The pantsuit is an empowering paradox for trailblazing women leaders: it makes a statement by saying little.”
Interestingly, women weren’t permitted to wear pantsuits on the Senate floor until 1993. Hillary Clinton’s iconic pantsuits have come to represent female empowerment and the arduous journey women have faced in the political arena. This makes it a fitting emblem for a group dedicated to lifting each other up and fostering a spirit of resilience.
