A dad’s comical account of his partner’s labor has taken the internet by storm, and for good reason. Sharing birth experiences has become a rite of passage for new mothers. From baby music classes to playground chats, the question of “How was your birth?” often arises, sometimes even in the most unexpected of places like the grocery store checkout line when the cashier is taking their sweet time. Much like recounting spooky tales around a campfire, it’s both entertaining and a bit terrifying to hear and share these stories.
However, it’s crucial to remember that while mothers are the ones doing the heavy lifting, they’re not alone in the delivery room. Ted Lawson, who goes by the name DadVibes, recently reminded us of this in a side-splitting Facebook post about the arrival of his son, Leo.
“I’ve always prided myself on staying calm in crises,” he began. “But when I got that call that my partner’s waters had broken, everything changed. The thrill of impending fatherhood vanished in an instant because, oh boy, a tiny human was about to emerge from my partner!” Lawson’s brutally honest reflection on the sheer panic he felt during the labor process resonates with many parents.
He earned major points as a husband by speeding to the hospital the moment contractions kicked in, disregarding the speed limit. But upon arrival, he quickly realized he wasn’t the only one feeling the pressure. “I parked as fast as I could, rang the buzzer furiously, and whisked her into a wheelchair, sprinting to the maternity ward like I was in the Olympics,” he recalled. “Then, this woman casually strolled over and opened the door for us. I just put in a performance that could rival any Olympic sprinter, and she acts like we’re arriving at a brunch!”
Lawson also discovered that childbirth is far messier than what is depicted in birthing classes. “You don’t really comprehend what love is until you’re hosing down your partner with warm water in front of strangers. This was like something out of a documentary. Dignity? Forget it at this point,” he joked. Sure, that’s not exactly something you’d want inscribed in an anniversary card, but kudos for stepping up when it mattered.
He accurately points out that all those birthing classes he attended offered little real preparation for the chaos of actual labor. “When your partner squeezes your arm and insists on an epidural in a voice that could belong to a horror movie villain, and it’s too late for that… Well, you’re in trouble. Let’s be honest, those classes didn’t teach me a thing,” Lawson quipped. “We should have been watching The Exorcist; I at least would have known what to expect and could have brought along some holy water!”
Ultimately, little Leo was born healthy, and Lawson describes the experience as both beautiful and overwhelming. He emphasizes that other soon-to-be dads should definitely be feeling the nerves. “If you know any men out there acting like they’re not anxious, they should be! Or send them my way; I’m practically a veteran now,” he concluded.

In summary, Lawson’s humorous recounting of his experience highlights the often-overlooked perspective of fathers during childbirth, showcasing the chaos, fear, and unexpected love that comes with welcoming a new life into the world.
