7 Reasons Suburban Living is Underappreciated

Having grown up in a small town in rural Wisconsin with only two stoplights and a population of about 5,000, I was eager to escape. After completing high school, I relocated to Madison, a vibrant college town, and later spent several years in bustling Chicago. Eventually, I found myself settling down in — you guessed it — the suburbs.

It’s no secret that suburbs often receive criticism for their uniform houses and seemingly monotonous neighborhoods. However, having experienced various living environments, from small rural areas to large cities, I firmly believe that suburbs are often misunderstood. Like any living situation, they come with their own set of challenges, but the positives often outweigh the negatives. So, here are seven reasons why suburban life can actually be pretty great:

  1. Kids Enjoy a Classic Childhood
In the suburbs, my children can roam freely, walking a safe distance to school with their friends. They run through yards and play until dusk, reminiscent of our own childhoods. While my mom might have poured herself a Tab back in the day, I now sip on sparkling water, but the essence remains the same.
  2. Ample Parking Space
One of the perks of suburban life is the abundance of parking. Whether you drive a minivan or an SUV, you won’t find yourself searching for a spot for ages. Yes, you might occasionally mix up your silver Honda Odyssey with another, but who cares?
  3. The Best of Both Worlds
Suburbs combine the charm of rural living with the conveniences of city life. It’s like a lifestyle mullet—business in the front, party in the back! You get the tranquility of open spaces while still having access to urban excitement.
  4. Occasional Urban Adventures
Every now and then, the suburban lifestyle allows us to pretend we’re young and trendy again. With just a short drive, we can dive into the city’s cultural scene, exploring museums or trendy eateries. Sure, most nights we find ourselves in bed by 9 p.m. but when the opportunity arises, we can relive those vibrant days—at least for a little while before heading back home.
  5. Chain Restaurants Galore
Suburbs are filled with familiar chain restaurants, offering comfort food that many people love to hate. Whether it’s a massive plate of pasta at Olive Garden or a slice of cheesecake larger than my head, there’s something oddly satisfying about indulging in these guilty pleasures after a long day.
  6. Supportive Neighbors
Living in the suburbs means having neighbors who are often willing to lend a helping hand. Whether it’s watching your pets, collecting your mail, or assisting with car troubles, the community spirit is strong and supportive.
  7. Excellent Public Schools
Suburban areas often boast quality public schools with dedicated teachers and plenty of resources, making education accessible without the hefty price tag of private institutions. This allows parents to focus on the important things, like navigating the carpool lane or preparing snacks for sports practice.

Admittedly, I may fit the typical suburban stereotype, sporting comfy yoga pants and driving my dented minivan to dinner at a chain restaurant. But you know what? I embrace it.

Home is where the heart is, but true happiness lies in the ease of parking, the joy of cheesy garlic biscuits, and the acceptance of this unique lifestyle that, despite its clichés, I genuinely appreciate.
