Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

In this phase of life, I often grapple with the monotony of daily tasks that seem endless. While I cherish the grander cycles—like the changing seasons and the comforting rhythms of holidays and family traditions—I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the smaller, repetitive chores that fill my days. I recently stumbled upon a thought-provoking excerpt from Voices by Ursula K. Le Guin, which resonates deeply with my experience:

“Why do storytellers overlook the everyday acts of housekeeping and cooking? Isn’t it these very efforts that allow families to come together at the end of the day, creating a peaceful home? While tales highlight grand adventures and heroic feats, they often ignore the quiet, essential work that sustains life at home. Women and children in the background are also struggling, managing to find food and uphold traditions even when the world outside is chaotic.”

There’s nothing particularly thrilling about scrubbing a skillet or filling the dog’s bowl. It feels silly to expect a pat on the back for folding yet another shirt or cleaning up spilled applesauce. These tasks often go unnoticed, merely serving as the backdrop for life’s bigger moments portrayed in movies and literature. People joke about housekeeping as if it’s something to be avoided, with memes mocking the struggle of maintaining a tidy home. Yet, the reality remains: someone has to wash the dishes, pick up the toys, and ensure there are clean clothes to wear.

For much of my life, I’ve been driven by a desire for more. While this ambition fuels my writing and creative pursuits, it also makes mundane tasks like mopping the floor feel monumental. It’s a mental and emotional challenge. Yet, I’ve come to appreciate that the unseen work—done without accolades—keeps life moving forward. Perhaps, in this context, even mopping the floor can be seen as a significant contribution.

As I navigate this stage of life, I strive to find joy in the daily grind. With three young children, the demands multiply—laundry, meals, and a myriad of other tasks that require my attention amidst the delightful chaos. I know I will miss these moments someday, despite their frustrations.

My son, Max, loves to help with laundry. Although it takes longer, the conversations we share about school, friends, and life’s big questions make the effort worthwhile. My daughters also enjoy cooking with me, eagerly taking turns and delighting in the aromas of vanilla and cinnamon wafting through the kitchen. Even when I cook alone, I find joy in the simple acts—the satisfying sound of a knife chopping vegetables or the enticing scent of garlic sizzling in olive oil.

Embracing these small tasks can be challenging, especially as I juggle life’s bigger responsibilities. However, I remind myself that these everyday chores form the foundation of our lives, a sturdy canvas for the masterpiece that is family life. As I wash away the remnants of the day, I hold onto the belief that the small acts of care and attention are, in fact, the big things that sustain us.
