Middle schoolers are known for their boundless energy, making it a challenge for educators to keep them focused during class. Dr. Jason Thompson, a teacher at River Valley Middle School, recognized this issue and sought a solution to help his students channel their restlessness productively. “Transitioning from elementary to middle school, I observed that my students struggled significantly with concentration,” he explains. “It wasn’t intentional fidgeting; rather, they had an abundance of energy that needed expression.”
After researching various options, Dr. Thompson was inspired by the concept of treadmill desks, standing desks, and balance ball chairs. He ultimately discovered Desk Cycles, a compact pedaling system that fits discreetly under traditional desks. Concerns about funding initially held him back until he found a grant opportunity offered by 4C For Learning, which supports innovative projects that promote creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. His proposal clearly demonstrated how pedal desks could foster these essential skills, leading to a successful $2,000 grant application.
Dr. Thompson noted, “By allowing movement, my students can maintain better focus, which enhances their critical thinking and creativity.” With the grant funding secured, he acquired the Desk Cycles in April, and the results were evident almost immediately. “Within the first week, students reported feeling more focused,” he shared. Furthermore, there was a marked improvement in both the quality and quantity of their work. “I noticed a drastic reduction in missing assignments—about a 50 percent drop among my struggling students,” he added.
In today’s educational landscape, where physical education programs and recess time are often curtailed, such innovations are increasingly vital for children’s well-being and learning. “On days when students come in feeling overwhelmed, pedaling for a period allows them to release that pent-up energy,” Dr. Thompson recommends pedal desks to any educational institution looking to improve student engagement.
