Trump or No Trump, I’m Staying Put

As the election draws near, with Trump as the Republican nominee, I’ve felt compelled to address a pressing matter. If Trump emerges victorious, I will not be leaving.

It’s easy to express frustration and declare intentions to leave the country. The thought of escaping to a place where reason prevails and tolerance flourishes is enticing, especially for those of us who have the means—financial stability, job skills, and the opportunity to relocate. Most of us have clean backgrounds that wouldn’t hinder our departure.

But what about the millions of citizens without that privilege? Are we truly prepared to walk away from those whose circumstances prevent them from escaping? This nation is purportedly built on opportunities for all. Trump’s campaign is centered around the notion of making America “great again.” If those of us with privilege choose to abandon ship, what remains for the rest?

I refuse to allow history to record that, when faced with the rise of a tyrant, we opted for flight instead of fighting to reclaim our nation. I cannot bear to have my children learn that I chose to run away rather than stand with friends and neighbors in the face of adversity.

As a white, middle-class heterosexual, I recognize my responsibility. I may not face significant risks, but I still feel the weight of my privilege. My family is conventional; my husband works in skilled trades while I care for our children, who attend public schools. We rely on public services like libraries and parks, and while we are not wealthy, we live comfortably during these uncertain times.

I will not abandon my community when neighbors are marginalized for their gender identity. I won’t turn my back on friends denied the right to marry the ones they love. I refuse to contribute to a culture of fear and oppression by walking away while entire communities face discrimination based on their faith. I cannot stay silent as voting rights and reproductive freedoms are stripped away due to race, economic status, or gender. It feels shameful to consider relocating while overlooking those seeking refuge from violence and despair.

I will not turn my back on my country. I will raise my voice against injustice, hate, and bigotry. I will advocate fiercely for the rights of my fellow citizens and stand in solidarity with those who are oppressed. I will work tirelessly for equality, education, and compassion—qualities that will truly make our nation great again.

So, no, I won’t leave if Trump wins. I will fight for those who cannot leave and ensure their voices are heard.
