The Parenting Unity Agreement

Dear fellow parents with whom I regularly interact,

As a pediatrician and a parent, I’ve realized that our parenting journey is significantly smoother when we collaborate and align in front of our children. While it’s important for our kids to understand that every family has its own way of doing things, parenting is challenging enough without adding extra hurdles. So, let’s commit to making our time together more manageable.

In this spirit, I propose we stand united for the sake of our sanity and the wellbeing of our children. Therefore, I, your fellow parent in this challenging landscape, pledge to adhere to the following principles:

  1. When we gather for a celebration, I will coordinate our departure time with you, ensuring we leave together to avoid the dreaded, “But why do we have to leave first?”
  2. If we’re dining out, I will discuss with you beforehand whether the kids will have soda or water, setting the stage to prevent the inevitable meltdown over sugary drinks.
  3. Should I have treats like candy or ice cream, I’ll discreetly check in with you first to ensure it’s acceptable to offer your child sweets. If you could extend the same courtesy in return, that would be greatly appreciated.
  4. During dessert time, if our kids come to us asking for seconds, we’ll share a look that either conveys “no more” or “why not, they’re already hyper.” Once we reach a silent consensus, we’ll respond together.
  5. I promise not to give in to my child’s tantrum in front of yours, as it may encourage similar behavior. I trust you will do the same.
  6. For sleepover requests, we agree that at least 24 hours’ notice is required before making any decisions, and we will discuss these requests privately.
  7. In your absence, I will kindly remind your children about manners and hygiene, like using a tissue instead of their fingers. I expect you to reciprocate.
  8. If your child is misbehaving when you’re not around, I’ll inform you. I would appreciate the same honesty regarding my little ones.
  9. If you overlook any of these commitments, I won’t judge or blame you, because we know parenting is a tough gig.

To sum up, I am dedicated to easing the parenting experience when our families come together, and I hope you will do the same. We must support one another to navigate these years together. Let’s have each other’s backs, shall we?

Cheers,
Dr. Sarah Thompson
