19 Reasons Why I’m Enjoying the Teenage Years

In the world of parenting, babies often steal the spotlight. Everyone gushes over their tiny fingers and soft coos, dreaming of those sweet moments. But as a pediatrician and a parent, I have to admit: my heart belongs to the teenage years. Don’t get me wrong; I cherished my babies, but there’s something uniquely delightful about navigating life with teens. While many reminisce about babyhood, I revel in the present with my two teenagers. Here’s why:

  1. They’re Hilarious. The wit and humor that come out of their mouths can be side-splitting. Their puns and clever sarcasm are a joy to witness.
  2. Goodbye to Baby Shows. No more enduring endless loops of kids’ programming. My teens have moved on to more engaging media, which is a relief for my sanity.
  3. They Love Their Sleep. Teens can sleep in until noon, which, surprisingly, gives me time to recharge too.
  4. Self-Sufficient. They’re capable of dressing themselves and preparing their own meals. What a relief!
  5. Helpful with Chores. Unlike the preschooler who once “helped” wash a car with a rock, my teens can effectively contribute by doing dishes, laundry, and even mowing the lawn.
  6. No More Diaper Bags. The days of packing diapers, wipes, and snacks are long gone. It’s a liberating feeling!
  7. Quick Errands. Shopping with teens is efficient. No potty breaks or tantrums over toys. We often split up the grocery list and get things done quickly.
  8. Bathroom Independence. I’m grateful that they manage their own bathroom needs without my assistance.
  9. Handling Illness Like Champs. Gone are the days of catching vomit in my hands. My son recently took care of his own sickness without waking me.
  10. Packing Their Own Bags. They can pack for trips, and if they forget essentials, they learn valuable life lessons. One of them forgot underwear once, and I’m sure that won’t happen again!
  11. Understanding Sarcasm. They not only grasp sarcasm but are fluent in it, which I find amusing and relatable.
  12. Engaging Conversations. Their thoughts on everything from the universe to social issues make for interesting dinner discussions.
  13. Showers on Their Own. I no longer have to supervise slippery bath time, which is a huge relief.
  14. Sleeping In Again. Did I mention their love for sleep? It’s a wonderful bonus for me.
  15. No More Accidents. I can’t count the times I’ve rushed out of the door only to be hit with the smell of a diaper explosion. Those days are behind me!
  16. Less Disney Overload. While I enjoy Disney films, I’m grateful that we’re not watching them on repeat anymore.
  17. Privacy in the Bathroom. I can finally enjoy some peace when I need to use the restroom—no more curious little eyes.
  18. Movies for Everyone. I’ve had the pleasure of watching movies I enjoy with my teens, which has been a fantastic bonding experience.
  19. Freedom to Speak. I can express myself more freely without worrying about censoring my language, which feels liberating.

At the end of the day, I sometimes think my dining room conversations could be a hit reality show. If only someone would capture the candid moments of family life!
