Who would have thought cargo shorts were so reviled? As a physician, I’ve seen many trends come and go, but the disdain for these functional garments seems particularly fierce.
Let’s face it: my personal style has experienced a significant upgrade thanks to my partner. Gone are the days of oversized attire; I’ve transitioned to well-fitting clothing. My wardrobe now includes better-quality t-shirts, stylish jeans, and even a couple of belts. Much of what I wore from my college days has found its way to donations, and honestly, I’m better for it.
Marriage, for all its complexities, has improved my fashion sense, especially since I’m color-blind. However, every man has his sacred clothing items. While some cling to their favorite t-shirts, others have a soft spot for their cargo shorts. Yet, wives everywhere seem to have declared a crusade against them.
According to a recent piece in the Wall Street Journal, cargo shorts are deemed the epitome of fashion faux pas. Fashion critics and women alike have voiced their disdain. Golf courses have banned them; style expert Tim Gunn labeled them “the least fashionable item” in his closet (yes, even he owns a pair?). One wife candidly stated, “I can’t stand them. They are a blemish on the good things of the ’90s.” Personally, I’d argue that not much was great about that decade, and let’s not forget that cargo shorts were actually designed for practicality during WWII. They serve a purpose—especially for dads who don’t carry purses.
I may not don cargo shorts myself, but I’ve seen many fathers manage their day-to-day chaos with the help of those bulky pockets. From smoothies to pacifiers, these shorts can hold it all. On the other hand, I’ve never witnessed a woman retrieve anything particularly useful from yoga pants, nor have I encountered a pair of cargo shorts emblazoned with “JUICY.”
Redbook Magazine even published an article titled “Cargo Shorts Are Ruining Marriages Across America.” I can assure you that clothing alone does not destroy relationships, although if my partner wore a rival sports team’s shirt, we might need couple’s therapy.
One woman in the WSJ article remarked, “It reflects poorly on me if he leaves the house dressed like that.” If I ever suggested I felt embarrassed by my partner’s attire or secretly discarded her yoga shorts or oversized bags, I can assure you that would lead to serious marital strife. Trust is paramount; mocking your spouse while covertly discarding their clothes isn’t a recipe for a healthy relationship.
I would never dream of tossing out my partner’s yoga pants. Not out of fear of retaliation, but because I genuinely appreciate how comfy they look. If she opts for those while managing our hectic lives, more power to her. I mean, for a dinner date, perhaps a dress would be nice, but with two kids, she shouldn’t feel pressured to dress up just to get dirty from my son’s sticky fingers.
Being a dad is a challenging, messy endeavor that requires reinforcements, whether in the form of snacks or band-aids tucked away in a pair of cargo shorts. While they may not win any fashion awards, they certainly serve a purpose. However, if your partner insists on wearing camouflage cargo shorts, it might be time to seriously reconsider that relationship.
