As I crossed the threshold into my mid-thirties, a transformation took place within me. At 37, I’ve adopted a refreshing mindset that prioritizes my own well-being, making both motherhood and life significantly more manageable. With my eyes set on 40, I’m eager to embrace this new chapter as a midlife shift, where I unapologetically reject unrealistic expectations of womanhood, wifehood, and motherhood. If my thirties have taught me anything, it’s that I’m ready for what lies ahead.
Here are six things I’ve consciously removed from my life, feeling liberated in the process:
-
Self-Censorship
Growing up, I often heard, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” This advice is particularly harmful, and it’s time to toss it aside. In a world where negative voices are loud, I refuse to remain silent. My thoughts and opinions matter, even if they challenge the status quo or make others uncomfortable. -
Tolerating Mansplaining
Enough is enough. As a woman navigating a male-dominated environment both at work and home, I’ve encountered patronizing explanations far too often. I now make it a point to call out condescending behavior. I’m not a child; I deserve respect and acknowledgment of my intelligence. -
Neglecting My Own Joys
When it comes to food, I choose satisfaction over restriction. I’ll indulge in what brings me joy, whether that’s enjoying a glass of wine, treating myself to a luxury item, or scheduling much-needed girls’ nights out. I have desires beyond my responsibilities, and it’s time to honor them. -
Dieting
Unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise, I refuse to obsess over my appearance. I’m done worrying about how I look in a swimsuit or letting anyone dictate my fashion choices. Age and size do not define my self-worth. -
Unfriending Toxicity
Social media should be a space for positivity. I have no qualms about unfriending individuals who spread negativity or engage in harmful behavior online. My mental space is precious, and I refuse to allow negativity to cloud it. -
Communicating with Other Parents
It took me time to become comfortable with this, but I’ve learned the importance of addressing bad behavior among children. If your child is unkind to mine, I will speak up, but I also welcome feedback about my own child’s behavior. We’re all in this together, aiming to raise kind individuals.
Meeting strong women who exude confidence made me realize that true power originates from within. I’ve learned to establish boundaries that protect my happiness and self-worth. Now, I carry that power with me everywhere, and nothing will take it away.

In summary, embracing this new phase of life has empowered me to shed societal expectations and prioritize my own happiness and voice. As I look forward to the future, I do so with confidence and a commitment to living authentically.
