Celebrating Aunties: A Tribute by Dr. Emily Carter
In recognition of the unique and nurturing role that aunties play in our children’s lives, we dedicate this piece to these remarkable women. Often childfree, these figures offer love, support, and friendship that enrich the lives of both parents and kids alike. Whether they are relatives or long-time friends, every family has that special auntie who steps up to fill this significant role.
Established in 2009 by Jessica Harmon, the last Sunday in July is celebrated as National Auntie’s Day. This day is dedicated to acknowledging the contributions of these women, affectionately termed “Professional Aunts No Kids” or PANKs. They are the ones who swoop in when you feel overwhelmed—like when you’re about to toss the Frozen DVD out the window because you can’t bear to hear “Let It Go” one more time. Aunties bring the energy and patience that we sometimes lack, becoming the Mary Poppins our children adore.
While we may have missed the official day this year, the spirit of gratitude for aunties never fades. They are always ready to lend a helping hand or an understanding ear. As our children grow and we may find our coolness dwindling, it’s often the hip aunt who remains a trusted confidant for life’s big conversations.
PANKs are generous in more ways than one. Research indicates that they spend an average of $387 annually on each child in their lives, contributing not only to fun toys and games but also to educational expenses. A surprising 34% have even supported a child’s education financially. Additionally, many aunties extend their generosity to parents, with 45% providing monetary support to help with the costs of raising children.
Beyond their contributions to our children’s lives, we mothers cherish the friendship and insights of our childfree friends. They keep us updated on trends and offer a fresh perspective when we share parenting challenges. An auntie won’t judge your parenting choices against her own; instead, she provides support and honesty that sometimes our mother-friends cannot.
So, let’s raise a toast to all the aunties! Your presence in our lives makes a world of difference, and we truly appreciate everything you do.
