Each time I prepare for a getaway from my children, a wave of anxiety washes over me. It’s not the typical worries about flight delays or unfamiliar germs lurking in hotel rooms. No, it’s the anticipation of what awaits me upon my return. (Spoiler alert: it’s a chaotic house that reeks of unidentifiable odors and leftover snacks.)
I should feel grateful for this short escape, right? I mean, it’s a chance to recharge and enjoy some time away from the demands of motherhood. While I relish my moments of freedom, sipping cocktails with friends, I can’t help but think about the state of my home and the kids’ antics back in my absence.
In the days leading up to my departure, I’m a whirlwind of activity, trying to tidy up and create meticulous lists. “In case of a fever, here’s the number for the pediatrician! Don’t forget to check the fridge for leftovers!” I stock the pantry with easy-to-prepare meals that require no thought whatsoever—because I know whatever they consume will somehow become my problem later.
I shove health snacks to the front of the cupboard and label sippy cups with each child’s name. I buy fruits, even though I fully expect them to sit untouched. It feels like a futile effort, much like my attempts to convince my family to eat kale.
I do all this to ease my own burden when I return home, fully aware that my husband will likely be engrossed in reruns of old action movies while the kids wreak havoc, possibly reenacting their own wild wrestling matches.
As I enjoy my time out, I try to ignore the thought of the mess waiting for me. I indulge in a glass of sangria at lunch while pushing away the worry about whether the kids will remember to brush their teeth. And let’s not even talk about the laundry situation…
The sock situation, in particular, will be a disaster. My socks will mysteriously migrate to my husband’s drawer, and my daughter’s will vanish altogether. It appears that sock washing is a complex puzzle that some people struggle to solve.
When I’m away, I savor sleeping in and getting ready without interruptions. My makeup brushes remain untouched, and everything stays organized. However, I do find myself missing my family, because, deep down, I’m not completely heartless.
When I return, my family greets me in pajamas—possibly the same ones they wore days before—and they look like they’ve had quite the adventure. The house is sticky, and I stumble upon odd items in strange places: spatulas under beds, Cheerios hiding under cushions, and maybe even a misplaced Barbie doll in the dryer.
Re-entry into family life can be overwhelming. The key, I’ve realized, is to fully enjoy my time away so that when I’m on my hands and knees searching for the lost stuffed animal, I can still call my friend and genuinely say, “That was absolutely worth it.” Followed by, “When’s our next getaway?”
