If Moms Created Slang: A Doctor’s Take on Parenting Lingo

As a physician and a mom in my 30s, I find myself in a peculiar position. While I may not be the best source for understanding the latest slang terms, I certainly have a grasp on the language of parenting. Like many mothers, I’ve resorted to Googling slang just to keep up. Who exactly is this Felicia everyone keeps saying goodbye to? It appears I’m not the only one out of the loop.

Yet, when it comes to parenting jargon, I speak fluent toddler. I can easily differentiate between a child calling for “Mom! Mom!” versus “Mom? Mom?” Given the immense contributions moms make to society, it only seems fair that we define the slang that reflects our realities.

1. On Fleek

Real meaning: Describes something that’s perfectly executed, like fashion.
Mom twist: Refers to a bargain found at a flea market, e.g., “This outfit was totally on fleek for just $10!”

2. Netflix and Chill

Real meaning: A euphemism for intimate encounters, often humorously linked to binge-watching.
Mom version: Dozing off while watching the latest series, e.g., “I fell asleep during House of Cards at 8:30 p.m.”

3. Bae

Real meaning: A term of endearment meaning “before anything else.”
Mom adaptation: A fun abbreviation for bagel, e.g., “I could really go for a bae with cream cheese.”

4. Squad

Real meaning: Your close group of friends.
Mom interpretation: Referring to your children, e.g., “We’re late because getting the squad ready takes forever.”
Bonus: Squad Goals: Aiming for peace among siblings, e.g., “No fighting today! #SquadGoals!”

5. Stay Woke

Real meaning: Being aware of social issues.
Mom meaning: Struggling to stay alert after sleepless nights, e.g., “The baby kept me up all night. Just trying to stay woke.”

These terms may already be outdated by the time you read this, but I look forward to adapting the next wave of slang. Until then, farewell, Felicia! (Meaning goodbye to anyone named Felicia; I hope your day is wonderful!)
