What’s more empowering than a remarkable business? A remarkable business founded by women!
At Parenting Today, we are huge fans of the children’s clothing line, Simple Threads. Founded by Emily Parker and Sarah Johnson, this brand focuses on kids’ apparel that embodies “simplicity, quality, and affordability, with all items under $25.” This means no flashy logos, no cheesy phrases, and certainly no glitter; just charming, high-quality clothing that’s ideal for mixing and matching. What’s not to appreciate about that?!
We chatted with Emily and Sarah to delve deeper into their vision and mission.
Q: Your clothing line promotes “no cartoon characters, no princesses.” What’s your take on graphics and characters?
(Laughs) We have no issues with them! We understand the appeal of a fun graphic tee, and our children have certainly gone through phases of loving their favorite characters. We just noticed a gap in the market for simple, well-crafted clothing available in beautiful colors.
We seized the opportunity to create a go-to place for fantastic clothes that every child needs—whether to coordinate with a favorite design or to enjoy colorful simplicity from head to toe. Not every outfit needs to feature logos, slogans, or characters.
Q: How can a wardrobe full of solid colors simplify life?
A collection of beautiful solid colors is a collection of can’t-miss options. Everything coordinates, allowing kids to dress themselves with confidence, while parents can relax knowing their little ones won’t emerge in mismatched outfits with wild patterns and oversized logos (which can be amusing occasionally, but not every day!). This is a win-win for parents and kids as they explore their individuality.
Q: How do you launch a business while raising your kids?
As mothers managing our own business, we work incredibly diligently, but we do so on our own terms, and flexibility is key. We make it home in time to spend evenings with our kids and work after they go to bed. We work from home when someone is unwell or has a performance!
This necessity makes us focused and efficient during work hours while remaining mindful of the precious time we have with family. As partners, we support and uplift each other to make it all work. Finding balance is something to celebrate, not to feel guilty about.
Q: Why choose Simple Threads over budget-friendly options like Target or Old Navy?
Our aim with Simple Threads wasn’t to be the cheapest option out there, but rather to provide unmatched quality at reasonable prices. We invest in high-quality fabrics that are both soft and durable. Our styles are straightforward yet modern, designed by a fantastic designer named Liam Roberts, and we offer a wide range of vibrant colors.
All items are priced below $25 because we understand the fleeting nature of childhood, and we don’t want to spend more than that on clothes that will soon be outgrown—or stained with ice cream!
Q: What advice do you have for other moms aspiring to start their businesses?
First off, being a mother equips you well for entrepreneurship. Moms see the world through the lens of many consumers—we are the customers. The best businesses emerge from personal experiences and passions, so start with what you genuinely desire for yourself. That’s how we felt about Simple Threads.
Then, just begin. Perfection isn’t necessary (it’s unlikely to happen). Take one step and then another. Seek guidance from trusted mentors when possible. The individuals who believed in us were invaluable in opening doors and providing crucial support and advice along the way. Surround yourself with cheerleaders!
