A few months ago, we realized that Sarah and the kids had one last week of summer freedom before school started. So, we decided to seize the moment and plan a three-day, two-night getaway to Yosemite. I hadn’t visited since childhood, and with the kids quickly becoming fans of the great outdoors, it felt like the perfect time for an adventure.
We chose to stay at the Housekeeping Camp. To be honest, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect, but the idea of not having to pitch our own tent was appealing. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised! The accommodations resembled a canvas cabin with one concrete wall and a canvas roof that extended over the porch. Inside, there was a double bed, a bunk bed, and even electricity for charging our devices—a total win!
We lucked out with a spot right by the river, and the kids wasted no time skipping rocks and gazing at the majestic mountains. Yosemite truly lives up to its reputation; the breathtaking beauty and raw power of nature greet you at every turn. It’s an experience that can be almost overwhelming, but in the best way possible.
Highlights from Our Trip
Here are some highlights from our trip that made it a success:
- Junior Ranger Campfire: This program was a fantastic way for the kids to learn about the park’s wildlife. There was a lot of talk about bears, which initially made my son, Jake, a bit anxious. However, he found comfort in the idea that if a bear showed up, we could just offer it s’mores! Overall, it was a valuable lesson in understanding the wild and the importance of conservation.
- Hiking Adventures: We kicked off our first full day with a hike to Yosemite Falls. The trail was relatively easy, but arriving at a dry waterfall was a bit of a letdown. We then headed to Bridalveil Fall, where we spotted water flowing. The kids loved this one! The trail was steeper and longer, but the sight of the cascading water and the chance to climb on the rocks at the base made it worthwhile. There were some warning signs advising caution, but that’s just part of the rock climbing thrill, right?
- Bike Riding: Our bike ride turned out to be a highlight! We rented bikes at Curry Village, opting for a tandem bike for Jake and me, while Sarah and our daughter, Lily, took a bike with a trailer. It took a little time to get used to the tandem, but we ended up loving it! The paths were clearly marked and allowed us to explore the valley floor. We stopped for a lunch break at a picnic area near Degnan’s Deli, which offers great vegetarian options. After returning our bikes, we couldn’t resist stopping for ice cream in Curry Village.
- Swimming Fun: After our bike ride, we followed the river behind our cabin to find an awesome swimming spot to cool off. The kids had a blast! Jake even ventured out to a log in the deeper part, showing off his cannonball skills. Meanwhile, Lily was perfectly content rolling around in the sand. The water was chilly but refreshing, and the views were simply stunning!
Of course, we also indulged in making s’mores, enjoying the company of deer and squirrels, sharing spooky stories, and gathering around the campfire. If you’re considering a trip to Yosemite with your little ones, I hope these experiences provide a helpful starting point.
In summary, our time in Yosemite was short but incredibly rewarding. The drive was long, and we came home exhausted, but we all fell in love with the park. Each season offers a different experience, so we’re already planning our next visit!
