Is It Truly a Vacation When the Kids Are Along?

I’d love to say it was a brilliant idea when I planned this trip, but that would be far from the truth. I’ve traveled with my children before—well, with my eldest child, since the youngest is still an infant. Although those trips brought joy, they didn’t really fit the traditional definition of a vacation. Vacations are supposed to be about unwinding, recharging, and maybe even indulging in a good book. But vacations with kids? That’s a whole different ballgame.

This time, I was traveling with my 5-year-old and my 3-month-old. To say I was expecting relaxation would be an understatement. So, no, it didn’t seem like a good idea—before, during, or after the trip. Sure, we had fun. A family getaway isn’t quite like sitting in an office worrying about deadlines, but it’s not the same as a peaceful retreat either. Let’s dive into the highlights!

Flight and Accommodations

Surprisingly, the flight went smoothly. The baby slept the entire journey, much to my relief, avoiding any outbursts that could have drawn the ire of fellow passengers. My 5-year-old was entertained, mostly by movies and a seemingly endless supply of snacks. It was a relatively short flight—around four hours—and we made it without any major incidents. Our accommodations were fantastic. The hotel was beachside with two accessible pools and a poolside bar, which made lugging all our essentials a bit easier. The weather was delightful, the food delicious, and the atmosphere family-friendly.

Challenges Along the Way

Now, on to the not-so-great aspects. While the flight was manageable, it didn’t come without its challenges. The baby had a blowout at 35,000 feet, and let’s just say that changing a diaper mid-air is not for the faint-hearted. My 5-year-old, while initially obedient, soon refused to stay seated. The snacks he requested were either out of reach, unavailable, or shockingly overpriced.

The hotel was so appealing that my 5-year-old didn’t want to explore beyond its confines. He spent half our stay glued to a SpongeBob movie playing in the lobby, while I was stuck there with him because, for some reason, 5-year-olds require constant supervision. The baby managed well on the beach, avoiding dehydration and sunburn, largely thanks to the portable shade we set up and the mountain of sunscreen I carried around. I certainly got my workout in, hauling all that gear to the shore each day.

Sleep and Dining Dilemmas

One of my main objectives during vacation is to catch up on sleep. No early morning commutes or work deadlines should mean lazy mornings, right? Unfortunately, the baby’s sleep schedule took a hit in the unfamiliar environment, and my 5-year-old’s internal clock seemed to be set at 5:30 a.m., eager to see the next installment of that SpongeBob movie he had already watched a dozen times. So much for extra sleep!

As with most holiday spots, the dining options were pricey, which would have been manageable if my son hadn’t turned his nose up at everything we bought. Drinks were exorbitantly priced too, and we blew our budget trying to cope with the chaos of managing two kids on an island. Souvenirs came with a hefty price tag, and my son managed to lose or break each one we purchased. The cost of hiring babysitters was steep, but it might have been worth it if only our kids would cooperate!

Final Thoughts

By the end of the week, we had spent a significant amount to escape the daily grind and create lasting memories with our children. We succeeded in both, despite the fact that one child won’t remember a thing, while the other will likely recount every line from that SpongeBob movie.

Traveling is enjoyable. Parenting can be rewarding (yes, really!). However, vacations with kids present unique challenges. They offer moments of joy mixed with inconveniences, and while it’s likely worth it in the long run, it’s certainly not the same as it once was. After becoming a parent, that sense of ease is forever altered.

In summary, while a family trip contains its share of fun, it’s often a far cry from what we once knew as a vacation.
