In today’s fast-paced world, technology often gets a bad rap. People frequently bemoan how it has made life busier, noisier, and less personal. Parents express concern over their children being glued to screens, opting for video games and texting over outdoor play. Restaurants are filled with couples distracted by their phones, while subway cars are packed with commuters who rarely look up.
However, as a physician and a mother, I must admit that technology has significantly eased my parenting journey. I often wonder how mothers in the past managed without the conveniences we now take for granted. For instance, I can’t fathom how my own mother navigated the chaotic world of parenting in the ’80s without the internet. Here are five ways technology has transformed motherhood for the better:
-
Party Planning for School Events
Then: My mother would spend endless hours making phone calls to coordinate a simple classroom gathering. She’d call everyone from the busy mom, Lisa, who never answered, to the well-intentioned but forgetful mom, Karen, who might misplace the party details. The entire process could stretch on for weeks, causing a lot of unnecessary stress.
Now: With a quick email, I can reach out to all the parents involved in just a few minutes. Sure, a couple of people might hit “reply all” a few too many times, but overall, the planning happens seamlessly while I juggle other tasks, like picking up the kids from soccer practice. -
PTA Meetings
Then: Monthly PTA meetings were a must-attend affair. Dressed to impress, my mother would engage in lengthy discussions, often missing out on vital information if she couldn’t make it. Gossip and updates were exchanged over homemade refreshments, creating a sense of community but at the cost of precious time.
Now: I stay informed about my children’s schools through their social media channels. I can read meeting minutes and updates on the go, often while waiting in the car for the kids to finish their activities. Nowadays, attending those meetings feels almost optional. -
Grocery Shopping
Then: My mother would navigate crowded grocery aisles in search of essentials like bread and milk, often battling with three children in tow. The process was exhausting and time-consuming, taking hours to complete.
Now: I can order my groceries online from the comfort of my couch, sometimes even while enjoying a glass of wine. A delivery person drops off my order, and I only need to spend a few minutes putting everything away. It’s a far more efficient system! -
Work-Life Balance
Then: My mother commuted to her job each day, adhering to a strict schedule that allowed her to separate work from home life. She had a clearly defined role and responsibilities, with limited interruptions.
Now: I work from home, usually in comfy clothes, while multitasking between professional obligations and parenting. Although the lines can blur, and I often find myself working through distractions, it’s a flexible arrangement that my mother didn’t have. -
Connecting with Others
Then: Without the convenience of emails or social media, my mother had to interact face-to-face for all her communication. Juggling relationships while managing a household was a demanding task.
Now: Modern technology allows me to manage my social life with ease. I can communicate with friends via text, arrange playdates through email, and even reconnect with high school classmates through social media platforms. This convenience is a game-changer.
In conclusion, while technology may sometimes feel isolating, it has undeniably empowered me as a mother, allowing for a better balance of responsibilities. Although I occasionally miss the personal touch of face-to-face interactions, the benefits of modern conveniences far outweigh the drawbacks. After all, I can enjoy my favorite shows without worrying about dressing up for a PTA meeting!
