Please Tell Me You’ve Been That Mom

I’m a doctor and I’ve witnessed countless parenting moments, but one stands out as a chaotic reminder of what it means to be a mom. It was an ordinary trip to Target, and I made the fateful decision to take my energetic toddler, Lily, along with me for some shopping.

My first mistake? As soon as we entered the store, she pointed towards the food court and exclaimed, “this way!” Like any mom, I followed her lead, thinking, “Why not?” She looked so innocent and sweet, and I momentarily forgot the chaos that can ensue from a simple snack request.

Then came the popcorn. I knew it was a terrible idea, but Lily’s enthusiasm was contagious. She was so adorable saying “popcorn”—a word I didn’t even know she had in her vocabulary! I succumbed to her charm. I’m sure you’ve been there too, right?

For a brief moment, I felt victorious as she munched on her popcorn, but I quickly discovered it wasn’t long before the mess began. As we moved through the aisles, she left a trail of popcorn scattered behind her. I picked up each piece, still patting myself on the back for being a “capable” mom.

Next, we ventured into the sock section for some cute Easter socks to complement her sailor dress. However, the popcorn had created a small disaster, and in a moment of desperation, she dropped her toy lipstick and demanded to sit in the back of the cart. Oh, why did I let her? You can guess what happened next.

While chatting with another mom, Lily decided to unleash her popcorn chaos in the toy section. I should have seen this coming! The other mom was kind enough to help me clean up the mess, but as I struggled to keep Lily contained, she began to climb out of the cart. With one hand on the popcorn and the other desperately trying to hold her back, I felt utterly defeated. The well-behaved kids nearby looked like little angels, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of judgment. Haven’t we all been there at least once?

Amidst the chaos, Lily spotted an Elsa microphone and yelled, “Let it go!” I grabbed it, and just like that, we made our way to the checkout—only purchasing the microphone. It was a survival tactic, pure and simple.

As I sat in the car shaking from the experience, I realized I had let her win. She was singing away into her new toy, and I knew it wasn’t the best choice to reward her behavior. But sometimes, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to escape. Please let me raise this little whirlwind of energy with grace one day.

If you can relate to this story, I’m right there with you. And if you’ve never had a day like this, I hope your luck continues. Just as a side note, I will never buy popcorn again at Target—lesson learned!
