When it comes to Disney, there is no shortage of guidebooks—ranging from those aimed at children, dining options, budget tips, and even running events. However, prior to the release of Laura Bennett’s “Mouse Ears for Everyone”, there was a notable absence of resources specifically tailored for families with disabilities.
Bennett, a former Disney cast member and the mother of two, including a daughter with cerebral palsy, was taken aback by the lack of information available for families like hers. “After extensive online searches yielded little useful information, I felt compelled to create this guide to assist families navigating Disney with disabilities,” Bennett shared. “It became clear that our community needed better representation, and I knew I could help.”
Initially conceived as a guide focused on autism, Bennett’s book encompasses a wide spectrum of disabilities, addressing developmental delays, sensory sensitivities, mobility issues, food allergies, service animals, hearing challenges, and other medical considerations. Drawing from her own experiences on 30 visits to Disney, as well as interviews with families, Disney staff, and other experts, she has created a comprehensive resource. Bennett also encourages readers to share their insights on the “Mouse Ears for Everyone” website to ensure all relevant topics are covered.
“Disney is designed to be accessible, but not every aspect is friendly for everyone,” Bennett explained. “For instance, some ride lines are too narrow for electric scooters, necessitating transfers to wheelchairs provided by Disney. While some attractions require assistance to board, others allow guests to remain in their mobility devices.”
When it comes to accommodations, Bennett noted that some resorts offer better accessibility than others. “I’m particularly fond of the Caribbean Resort due to its pool facilities and convenient bus access, but I would advise against the Boardwalk for those needing more support.”
For families apprehensive about Disney’s accessibility, Bennett reassures that adjustments can be made to tailor the experience to individual needs. “It might not be perfect, but it can certainly be magical,” she stated. “With some preparation—like bringing noise-canceling headphones—and utilizing Disney’s exceptional customer service, every family can enjoy their visit.”
Bennett suggests familiarizing children with the experience ahead of time by sharing videos of attractions and resorts. “This can help set expectations; for example, explaining that Mickey is much larger than a typical mouse and that some rides may be dark,” she added.
