Meet Lily, a spirited 5-year-old from Maine, and her charming pet duck, Puddles. Their heartwarming adventures are so delightful that you’ll be tempted to seek out ducklings to adopt after witnessing their bond. Lily proudly claims, “I’m his mom,” when asked about Puddles’ origins. When questioned about the duck’s biological mother, she confidently reiterated, “Yep, I’m his mom.”
Puddles, the male duck, found his forever friend last summer when he imprinted on Lily, forming an inseparable connection. “When we brought him home, he was this little yellow fluffball making a racket in a box. But as soon as Lily leaned in, he quieted down,” Lily’s mom, Sarah Matthews, shared with CBS News. “He follows her everywhere, and if she goes out of sight, he panics and starts squawking.”
This unlikely duo quickly became the best of friends. Since Puddles refused to stay outdoors at night, the Matthews family decided to keep him as an indoor duck, complete with a diaper. “He’s welcome almost everywhere, even in places where pets aren’t usually allowed,” remarked Lily’s dad, Tom. He eagerly waits for her at the bus stop after school, enjoys car rides on outings, and even joins her for sleepovers.
Pet ducks have gained popularity in pop culture, with characters like Chandler and Joey from “Friends” and Phil from “Modern Family” showcasing their charm. However, Lily’s authentic relationship with Puddles surpasses any fictional tale. Together, they enjoy beach outings in the summer and sledding in the winter. Last Halloween, he even dressed up as Olaf the snowman, complementing the family’s “Frozen” theme.
Beyond their adorable friendship, Lily is learning valuable lessons about responsibility and care. “I’ve watched her maturity blossom,” Sarah noted. “She takes exceptional care of Puddles.”
