5 Times I Wish My Kids Would Give Me a Break

As a parent, my love for my children is as strong as a doctor’s dedication to their patients. However, there are moments when I wish they would just let me have a little peace and quiet, even if only for a short while. Here are some of those times:

1. In the Middle of the Night

Hey there, little one, do you hear that? Those are the sounds of nature at night – owls hooting and raccoons rummaging through trash. It’s a reminder that you should be tucked in bed, dreaming sweetly. If you’re feeling scared or need a hug, I’m here for you. But when it’s 3 a.m. and you want a snack because you skipped dinner, or your bug bite is bothering you, I have to draw the line. Sorry, but not tonight.

2. When They’re a Sticky Mess

If you come to me covered in any combination of pee, goo, syrup, or, heaven forbid, glitter, please take a step outside and wait by the garden hose. Even if you were covered in a fine wine, I’d still need a moment to prepare for the cleanup operation. It’s hard to remain calm when confronted with such sticky chaos!

3. At the Crack of Dawn

Waking up before the sun has barely risen is a sure way to get the dreaded disappointed look from me. Just because our house is designed to let the morning sunlight hit you first doesn’t mean you need to leap onto my bed, startling me awake without even the courtesy of a cup of coffee. Next time, could you bring me a donut to soften the blow?

4. During Intimate Moments

Unless we’re living in some alternate universe where children witness their parents’ private moments, it’s completely awkward when you wander into the bedroom and ask why Mom and Dad are sharing the same side of the bed. Extra points for making it even more uncomfortable by asking if Daddy is hurting Mommy! Let’s just agree that anything resembling “the birds and the bees” should remain a mystery for a while longer.

5. In the Bathroom

No matter what my intentions are, you seem to follow me into the bathroom every single time! You have an uncanny ability to ask loudly whether I’m going to pee or poo, and if you can watch. It feels like a form of poetic justice for all those years I spent potty-training you! Please remember, it’s a “potty break,” not a family conference.

As parents, it’s completely normal to wish for some alone time now and then. But before you know it, those little ones will be back, and you’ll find them irresistibly charming once again. In conclusion, while parenting can feel overwhelming at times, it’s essential to cherish those moments of connection and love.
