Good news for parents! Apple has finally updated its trade-in policy to accept iPhones with cracked screens and broken components. This means that the device your child accidentally dropped can now have some value.
We all know that letting kids play with our phones is a common practice. There’s no need to pretend otherwise. When I last upgraded my phone, the shattered screen made it impossible to trade in, which was incredibly frustrating given the high cost of smartphones. Thankfully, Apple seems to be acknowledging the reality that broken screens are a frequent issue—many of us deal with this on a regular basis.
Starting this week, customers will be able to exchange iPhones with damaged screens, cameras, or buttons for credit towards newer models at Apple Retail locations. In addition, the company is launching a program that allows stores to install screen protectors on iPhones. A smart move, indeed! It would be even better if they could develop a glass that wasn’t so easily breakable.
According to sources, the updated program will accept iPhone 5s and iPhone 6/6 Plus models with reasonable damage. This initiative aims to encourage customers to upgrade their iPhones instead of opting for standard repairs. Current trade-in values are reported to be $50 for a 5s, $200 for a 6, and $250 for a 6 Plus.
This is certainly better than nothing. The last phone I damaged had a small crack at the top of the screen, and while I managed to tape it up and give it to my young child as a toy, he was far more interested in my shiny new device. A small crack once rendered iPhones nearly worthless unless you were willing to put in some effort to sell it on platforms like eBay or Craigslist.
But for those of us juggling busy schedules, this new option simplifies the upgrade process. After all, ease is the motto of every parent, right?
