Everyone claims that parenting is both the most challenging and the most fulfilling role you will ever undertake. Each phase presents its own set of challenges, and just when you start to feel at ease, everything shifts unexpectedly. One day, I woke up to discover I had three teenagers on my hands, and according to other parents, things are only going to get tougher. I can’t help but reminisce about those sleepless nights when I was searching for pacifiers to soothe a baby. Honestly, I would gladly take a toddler’s tantrum over the complexities of raising a teen any day.
Parenting teens requires a delicate balance—you must be supportive enough to guide them, yet allowing them the freedom to make their own choices and mistakes. After all, that’s essential for their growth. The fear of making mistakes looms large; telling my future teenagers “Don’t have sex” is clearly ineffective, as most of us know what that leads to. Yet, encouraging them with “Yes! Have sex; it’s fantastic!” is equally misguided. We must establish clear expectations and hope to equip them with the wisdom to make informed decisions.
Raising respectful and responsible teenagers is undoubtedly one of the toughest parenting challenges. Here are 20 things that might be easier:
- Swimming in the ocean at night after watching a horror movie.
- Doing a backbend right after devouring a chili cheese dog.
- Acquiring a royal family’s prized jewel.
- Managing three babies in diapers simultaneously.
- Cultivating delicate orchids in freezing temperatures.
- Running uphill in a marathon while being chased by zombies, all while keeping your heart rate low.
- Battling fire-breathing dragons armed with nothing but a toothbrush while dressed in flammable attire.
- Shaving intricate designs while heavily pregnant.
- Exiting Target without spending at least $100.
- Clearing ice off your car using only a LEGO brick.
- Potty training a two-year-old convinced the toilet is a monster.
- Removing a waterlogged item from the bathtub using toothpicks.
- Performing head spins on a bed of fire ants.
- Sticking to a diet during the holidays while working at a bakery.
- Teaching your dog not to sniff inappropriate areas.
- Becoming a professional tightrope walker with no balancing skills.
- Listening to fingernails on a chalkboard for an extended period.
- Limiting yourself to one Oreo during intense cravings.
- Finding your way through a massive corn maze with three crying toddlers.
- Keeping every New Year’s resolution for the rest of your life.
I know I will stumble—overstep boundaries, not engage enough, or snoop too much—but I’m okay with that. I will cherish the small, beautiful moments that make it all worthwhile, even amidst the serious conversations about drugs, alcohol, and relationships. After all, our kids are worth every bit of effort.
