16 Insights for My Daughters as They Begin Their Tween Journey

As they transition from childhood to their tween years, it’s vital to equip my daughters with insights that will guide them through the complexities of growing up. While this list isn’t exhaustive, here are 16 significant truths I hope they keep close to their hearts:

  1. Home Cooking is Empowering: You don’t need to rely on pre-packaged meals from drive-thrus. With just a few ingredients and a little effort, you can create delicious dishes from scratch. Whipped cream, for example, only requires three ingredients and five minutes of your time, and it’s worth it, especially atop warm pancakes. However, after a long day, I understand that a box of mac and cheese can be a lifesaver—just add some peas for a healthier touch!
  2. Advertising is Not Reality: The cheerful faces in ads are often paid actors. If you find yourself wanting something they promote, ask if you really need it. Most likely, you don’t.
  3. My Attention is Yours: No matter what I’m doing—be it listening to music, watching a game, or sleeping—I will always prioritize your voice. However, if you wake me up to say you’re hungry, we might need to discuss boundaries.
  4. Find Joy in Your Work: A stable job is important, but if it doesn’t bring you happiness, pursuing your passion is a valid choice. Life is too short to settle for anything less.
  5. Follow Your Heart: Sometimes it may lead you the wrong way, but the journey is invaluable.
  6. People Can Be Difficult: You will meet unkind individuals, but remember they are the exception, not the rule. Don’t let their negativity cloud your judgment of others.
  7. Balance in the World: Despite the negativity often highlighted in the media, goodness prevails. Maintain faith in the positive aspects of life.
  8. Be Kind: Your actions impact others. Always strive to be considerate, whether it’s treating service workers well or putting your shopping cart away.
  9. Appreciate the Little Things: Small gestures can have a significant impact. Every action contributes to the greater good.
  10. Books vs. Movies: Your love for reading will serve you well, but it’s perfectly fine to enjoy film adaptations of your favorite stories—even if you believe the book is superior.
  11. Youth is Fleeting: College will always be waiting for you, but make the most of your youth. Avoid clichés like running off to “find yourself”; I’ve invested too much in your upbringing for that.
  12. Confidence is Key: You don’t need alcohol to fit in or feel relaxed. Your natural personality is more than enough.
  13. Gossip Says More About Them: If people talk about you when you’re not around, it just highlights how fascinating you are.
  14. Sports Are for Everyone: You can be just as passionate about sports as anyone else, regardless of gender. Wear your team’s colors with pride.
  15. Interests Are Not Gendered: Science, sports, and even comic books are for everybody. Never feel limited by outdated stereotypes.
  16. Claim Your Space: If you’re passionate about something, don’t hesitate to assert yourself and join in. You deserve a place at the table.

While I could easily compile hundreds of lessons for my daughters as they grow, I’m aware that too much information can overwhelm. They will soon recognize that being a young woman in today’s world has its challenges, but as we navigate these together, I hope they remember that goodness outweighs the bad.
