New Year’s Resolutions for Moms: A Doctor’s Perspective

As the New Year rolls around, many of us reflect on our goals and aspirations. I recently came across a list of impressive resolutions from a friend, and while I admire her ambition, it made me chuckle as a parent. Here’s a glimpse of her intentions: read 65 books, swim every Tuesday night, try a recipe from each cookbook, and organize a room monthly. While these are admirable pursuits, they seem a tad unrealistic for those of us balancing the demands of motherhood.

Take reading 65 books, for example. I’d love that time, but let’s be honest—I probably read 65 books a year too, just not the type I’d choose! My son’s favorite stories are on repeat, and they’re not exactly literary masterpieces. As for swimming, my idea of multi-tasking is diving into the bathtub to rescue my phone during my son’s bath time.

Then there’s the goal of trying a new recipe from every cookbook. If only they had cookbooks dedicated to mac and cheese or chicken nuggets! I’m pretty sure I’ve tackled those countless times already. Organizing a room each month? That’s a good one. I can barely manage to clear the dinner table! If organizing means cramming everything into a closet before guests arrive, then I’ve mastered that art.

It’s clear my friend’s goals are not well-suited for someone with kids. So, I decided to create my own realistic resolutions, ones that resonate more with the everyday life of a mom. Here’s what I came up with:

  1. Shower Daily: Freshness is key, but let’s be real—waking up early enough for this is a challenge. Maybe I’ll start with every other day. That seems manageable, right?
  2. Dress Up Occasionally: Swapping out my trusty yoga pants for something nicer could be a nice change. However, post-holiday indulgence means those fitted clothes might be a bit snug. Perhaps I’ll save this resolution for next year or once I feel less like a muffin top!
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking more water is crucial for health, and hey, wine counts as hydration, right? I think I’m on the right track here.
  4. Exercise Regularly: Let’s be honest—committing to six days a week is far-fetched. Better to aim for something more achievable.

Ultimately, I’ve decided to focus on embracing who I am and the chaos that comes with motherhood. Because, in the end, I believe I’m doing just fine.
