As a pediatrician and a parent, I’m constantly navigating the exciting (and sometimes exhausting) world of childhood wonder. My son, who just turned 5, is absolutely buzzing with excitement for Christmas. He spends his evenings crafting elaborate wish lists, while I silently cringe at the thought of fitting even a fraction of his requests into our home. My partner, Sarah, is equally enthusiastic about the holiday, yet she is also dreadfully concerned that someone might ruin the Santa surprise for our son. Meanwhile, I’m just trying to survive the endless loop of holiday music that fills our house.
While I cherish the joy and magic of Christmas, I also recognize that my son will inevitably come to learn the truth about Santa. Rather than cling to the myth, I’d prefer he embrace some other imaginative lies that might serve him better in the long run. Here are eight fibs I’d rather my son believe than the story of Santa Claus:
- Brussels sprouts are candy. Anything to get him to eat his greens! I’d rather he find out about Santa than develop an aversion to vegetables.
- You can achieve anything you dream of. While reality may eventually set in, I won’t be the one to shatter his aspirations—at least not until he considers an overpriced degree with no job prospects. Dream big, especially if it involves technology!
- All pets go to a happy place. There’s something comforting about the idea that our furry friends are always in a joyful place.
- The zoo is permanently closed. Truth be told, it’s gone along with the museum and the playgrounds. Home is just safer now, so why not stay there?
- Skipping school means trouble for Mommy and Daddy. Whatever it takes to keep him motivated to learn!
- Sorry, that show you adore isn’t available anymore. Sometimes, parental sanity must come first.
- Beer is terrible. I can barely stifle my laughter thinking about this one.
- Mommy and Daddy were just play wrestling. Gotta keep the story simple and innocent!

In summary, while the myth of Santa Claus may be enchanting, there are plenty of other more valuable truths—and playful lies—I’d prefer my son to believe.
