This holiday season, hoverboards have emerged as the must-have gift, but not without a few alarming incidents; reports indicate that these self-balancing scooters have been known to catch fire or even explode. A residence in Louisiana suffered damage when a hoverboard ignited while charging, and a gentleman in Alabama experienced a hoverboard explosion right beneath him. The National Association of State Fire Marshals has advised potential buyers to research these devices thoroughly to ensure they meet safety standards, as it appears that the $250-$2,000 Segway-skateboard hybrids vary significantly in quality.
The risks seem to stem from the lithium batteries being overcharged, particularly when used with defective chargers. Experts also recommend that users keep a vigilant eye on the charging process, as neglecting to do so could lead to catastrophic incidents, including fires. Personally, I can barely find time to schedule a haircut, let alone supervise a hoverboard while it charges, worrying about my sneakers possibly emitting smoke.
Interestingly, 2015 was anticipated as the year we would see real hoverboards, as depicted in the iconic “Back to the Future” films. It raises the question—did manufacturers rush these products to market to capitalize on this cultural reference? Most of these devices hail from Shenzhen, China, regardless of branding. Those early adopters who have encountered fiery malfunctions might wonder if adequate safety testing was conducted prior to these products being available to the public. The only hoverboard I’ve observed up close was being ridden by a trendy young adult who touted its awesomeness right before losing balance and tumbling off it twice before rolling away at a snail’s pace.
Exploding, flames, and combustion are terms that certainly give pause when considering a gift for a child. While we cannot shield our kids from every potential hazard—be it riding a bike or skiing—we, as parents, continuously weigh risk against reward. In the case of hoverboards, it may be wise to allow some time for product improvements before diving headfirst into this year’s trendy gadget. In summary, while hoverboards have captured the imagination and attention of many, their safety concerns should not be overlooked. As we navigate the world of new technologies, it’s essential to prioritize safety and informed choices, especially when it comes to our children.
