The Motherhood Pledge

Just as physicians take the Hippocratic Oath to ensure ethical medical practice, and Presidents swear an Oath of Office to uphold their duties, there exists a gap in the journey of motherhood. There is no formal pledge, no binding commitment, and no solemn oath to guide us through this significant role. It’s time to change that narrative. For the sake of our well-being and our children’s, we need a collective agreement. Therefore, I present to you… The Motherhood Pledge.

I commit to uphold, to the best of my understanding and wisdom, this agreement:

  • I will honor the invaluable lessons learned from the mothers who have come before me, sharing insights when asked. Otherwise, I will remain quiet and not impose unsolicited advice.
  • I will do everything in my power to assist my child when they are unwell, but I will not panic when they stumble. Instead, I will encourage resilience. I will strive not to raise a child who overreacts to every minor discomfort, ensuring that their reactions do not disrupt the tranquility of others.
  • I will not hesitate to admit when I don’t have all the answers. On particularly tough days, I will seek support, recognizing that I don’t have to shoulder every burden alone.
  • I will respect the confidentiality of my fellow mothers. If someone prefers to keep a secret, I will not pry; and if they choose to share, I will assure them of my discretion.
  • I will actively work to combat feelings of inadequacy. If I create a meal that looks like a work of art, I won’t feel the need to share it online. And if my children actually eat something nutritious, I’ll be honest and tell you they had pizza and soda instead.
  • I will remember that I am part of a wider community, with responsibilities to my fellow mothers. If I notice something amiss, like an unexpected hair growth, I will gently inform her and offer help if I can.

If I uphold this pledge, may I find joy in my motherhood journey and be regarded with respect throughout my life. May I always honor the cherished traditions of motherhood.
