Motherhood Has Turned Me into a Slightly Unhinged Individual

Today, it struck me that my 3-year-old is growing less attached to his beloved blanket. Meanwhile, I realized I’ve never had the chance to rock my 21-month-old daughter to sleep. As the third child, she gets a quick kiss goodnight before being unceremoniously placed in her crib.

Now that my oldest has outgrown the need for bedtime rocking and my middle child only indulges me occasionally, I find myself yearning to rock a little one to sleep. Seriously, what gives?

Motherhood often makes me feel like I’m losing my grip on reality. In fact, I might just be a little bit crazy.

The Great Negotiation

To illustrate my point, I’ve pulled out a family photo from October 2012, a mere two months after what I like to call The Great Negotiation. This photo screams, “We need to have more kids!”

So, what exactly was The Great Negotiation? It was a lengthy process of convincing my husband, Alex, that we weren’t done growing our family. This was during a time when we were living on a single income and juggling two incredibly spirited boys, one of whom was still under a year old. In my mind, adding another baby to our chaos was the logical choice.

I can confidently say that there’s something slightly off about mothers and their instincts. The Great Negotiation took place during a date night at a local steakhouse. After much back-and-forth, Alex finally relented and said, “Alright. But I’m getting a vasectomy before the baby arrives.” To which I replied, “Fine. I’m ordering a drink.” Less than a year later, our daughter arrived.

Fast forward a year, and I found myself regretting that vasectomy decision. It’s like I have a condition—let’s call it Motherhood Madness.
