Twelve years ago tonight, I was deep in labor, feeling the weight of anticipation in my apartment. Alone and in discomfort, I knew I would soon call your dad to take me to the hospital. Just a few hours later, everything would change forever.
Your arrival marked the beginning of our family. You have been my constant companion since the start, a bond that formed between a mother and her son. It’s a journey filled with ups and downs, and I often find myself reflecting on how far we’ve come together.
From the moment you entered my life, you were there for every twist and turn. Our family expanded joyfully when you welcomed a stepfather at the age of one, then a half-sister at three. However, life also dealt us heartbreak when that little family fell apart when you were five. We healed in the quiet of our single-parent home, only to grow again when a new stepfather joined our lives when you were seven, followed by another half-sister at eleven. Now, we are a family of five.
As I look back, I cherish the family we’ve built, but I also recognize the many detours we took to get here. If I could have chosen a smoother path for you, I would have in a heartbeat. I envisioned a road filled with light and joy, where I would equip you with wisdom and protection.
But here we are. Our journey has been challenging, and I often felt unequipped to handle the blows life threw our way. I prayed for the strength to carry you through.
Now, as your birthday approaches, I see things differently. For much of this time, I believed I was shielding you from life’s hardships, but we have traversed this path together. You’ve experienced the highs and lows alongside me, learning and growing in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
Tomorrow, you turn twelve, and I know that with each step you take into the future, you’ll become even stronger and wiser. You’ve already begun to forge your own path, donning your armor and carrying your shield. The wisdom you’ve absorbed is evident in everything you do.
The future ahead is bright, and whether it’s 12 hours or 12 years down the line, I have no doubt that countless blessings await you. Thank you for being my son, for helping to shape our family, and for embarking on this journey with us. I am truly in awe of the life we share and grateful for all you bring to it.
