All The Moms I’m Not: A Doctor’s Perspective on Motherhood

When I first embraced motherhood, I found myself grappling with my identity as a mom. Surrounded by incredible mothers, each with their own unique strengths, I felt a strong desire to emulate them. However, I soon realized that I couldn’t do it all. I needed to discover my own style of parenting and accept it. Here are the types of moms I’m not:

The Mom Who Hosts Epic Playdates

You know the one—her home is always filled with fun activities like Play-Doh sculptures or exciting science experiments. Each gathering is impeccably themed, and her house rivals a carnival in entertainment value. That’s not me. My playdates tend to be low-key; the thought of a messy painting session with a crowd of kids makes me anxious.

The Mom Who Has Everything Under Control

She manages her life like a well-oiled machine—juggling twins, a toddler, and even a pet, all while maintaining a serene demeanor. Meanwhile, my kids are currently bickering over a single sand shovel. I’m definitely not that mom.

The Mom Who Could Be a Culinary Star

Her meals are Instagram-worthy, presented perfectly, and somehow, her kids devour them without hesitation. My family? We enjoy simple, repeat dishes, and my husband often wishes I could whip up something fancy like her. But alas, I’m not that mom.

The Mom Who Organizes Everything

From being actively involved in the PTA to coordinating neighborhood block parties, she’s the go-to social butterfly. I admire her, but I clearly lack the time and energy to take on such responsibilities. I’m not that mom.

The Mom Who Is Crafty Beyond Belief

She crafts, she sews, and her kids sport adorable homemade outfits. I can barely sew on a button and prefer to shop for my kids’ clothes rather than attempt to make them. I’ll just support her Etsy shop instead.

The Mom With a Spotless Home

Her house looks like it belongs in a magazine, with everything meticulously organized. If you dare to drop by, she’ll apologize for the “mess,” but I can assure you, I’m not that mom. A visit to my home will reveal toys scattered everywhere and beds that remain unmade.

The Mom Who Drinks Coffee

Many of my friends are coffee enthusiasts, but I’m not one of them. I’ve tried to enjoy it, but my true preference lies in tea. If we’re at a coffee shop gathering, I’ll be the one sipping on a nice cup of herbal tea, and that’s perfectly fine with me.

Ultimately, I’ve realized that I’m happiest when I focus on being my authentic self as a mom—not trying to imitate anyone else. I’m the mom with a cozy, slightly disorganized home; the one whose kids may not always behave perfectly. I strive to prepare healthy meals while occasionally indulging in treats. My priority is to create lasting memories with my children and ensure we all find joy in our everyday lives.
