My Friends Bring Joy to My Day

My absolute favorite phrase from my circle is, “I’m about to send you a picture.”

Everyone yearns for friends who come through in a pinch—whether it’s offering last-minute babysitting, lending a fabulous dress for a special event, or providing a comforting ear during tough times. Over the years, I’ve made it a point to surround myself with these gems. Kindness is abundant if you’re open to spotting it. These friends add a layer of comfort to my life, helping me juggle the demands of being a mom, daughter, sister, and writer.

But what truly makes me smile are the friends who see something quirky, think of me, and capture the moment to share. I’m fortunate to have a partner who roams the city for work, snapping oddities just for me—like bizarrely huge stuffed animals in storefronts, people in everyday cosplay, or dogs sporting S&M gear.

I feel incredibly lucky to have friends who do the same! Over the years, I’ve received a selfie from a friend who was getting ready to celebrate her birthday with a ridiculous bleach mustache and a turban, another dressed up like Carmen Sandiego because I asked her to keep a secret, and a hilarious postcard featuring an old man yelling at his grandkid, along with countless photos of animals doing their business in not-so-private places.

Recently, a friend called and said, “Wait, I’m sending you a picture.” My heart raced because she has a knack for finding the most amusing treasures at estate sales. I imagined a vintage typewriter or a cheeky tin sign, but no—my screen lit up with a box of 1920s rectal dilators! While rummaging through someone’s basement, she picked one up without realizing what it was until she saw the label on the other side of the table. I couldn’t stop laughing as I pictured her horror when she realized what it was, and of course, she snapped a photo just for me!

Sometimes these pictures come with backstories, while other times they arrive out of the blue without any context. This means my kids can never touch my phone when it buzzes, but I gladly keep my prized gadget away from their sticky fingers for the sake of these little moments of joy.

These snapshots are more than just images; they’re tiny bursts of happiness in my hectic life. With so much stress, obligations, and the constant barrage of bad news, these delightful surprises are a breath of fresh air. I often feel overwhelmed at home, on social media, and even when I’m just out running errands. Then, my pocket vibrates.

I glance at my phone to find a quirky photo that instantly lifts my spirits—making me laugh and momentarily escape the pressures of the day. I feel incredibly fortunate that my friends understand my humor and send these little delights to me, which I cherish more than soup when I’m sick or advice when I’m in a bind.

I hope to always have friends who keep me on my toes, sending delightful surprises to my pocket right when I need them.
