My absolute favorite phrase from my circle is, “I’m about to send you a picture.”
Everyone yearns for friends who come through in a pinch—whether it’s offering last-minute babysitting, lending a fabulous dress for a special event, or providing a comforting ear during tough times. Over the years, I’ve made it a point to surround myself with these gems. Kindness is abundant if you’re open to spotting it. These friends add a layer of comfort to my life, helping me juggle the demands of being a mom, daughter, sister, and writer.
But what truly makes me smile are the friends who see something quirky, think of me, and capture the moment to share. I’m fortunate to have a partner who roams the city for work, snapping oddities just for me—like bizarrely huge stuffed animals in storefronts, people in everyday cosplay, or dogs sporting S&M gear.
I feel incredibly lucky to have friends who do the same! Over the years, I’ve received a selfie from a friend who was getting ready to celebrate her birthday with a ridiculous bleach mustache and a turban, another dressed up like Carmen Sandiego because I asked her to keep a secret, and a hilarious postcard featuring an old man yelling at his grandkid, along with countless photos of animals doing their business in not-so-private places.
Recently, a friend called and said, “Wait, I’m sending you a picture.” My heart raced because she has a knack for finding the most amusing treasures at estate sales. I imagined a vintage typewriter or a cheeky tin sign, but no—my screen lit up with a box of 1920s rectal dilators! I often feel overwhelmed at home, on social media, and even when I’m just out running errands. Then, my pocket vibrates.

I feel incredibly fortunate that my friends understand my humor and send these little delights to me, which I cherish more than soup when I’m sick or advice when I’m in a bind.
