My Son Inspires a Kindness Challenge: A Lesson for All

“Mom, why can’t everyone just be nice?” That heartfelt question came after a routine trip to the dentist for my son’s biannual teeth cleaning. While we’ve been fortunate to have wonderful people in our lives, it’s a fact that some folks can be less than kind. Public outings often leave you uncertain about the reactions you might encounter.

Our dentist’s office is filled with fantastic professionals who consistently go the extra mile to accommodate individuals on the spectrum. I expected a warm reception when we arrived, but I was completely unprepared for the delightful interaction that unfolded.

No sooner had we settled in than a charming, grandmotherly woman entered the waiting room. She introduced herself with a radiant smile and asked if she could chat with my son. Surprised but pleased, I nodded in agreement. To my amazement, she effortlessly engaged him in conversation, asking about his favorite games, recent Lego creations, and even his top pick for the best Marvel superhero. Watching my son come alive with excitement was a joy, and I instinctively reached out to give him our calming shoulder pat. But this lovely lady intervened, reassuring me that it was wonderful to see him so happy.

As the time approached for his cleaning, she leaned in and whispered, “It’s okay. My grandson has autism too. Aren’t they just the sweetest?” With that, she beamed at me and headed toward my son.

On our ride home, my son asked, “Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?” The kindness he had experienced from a stranger resonated deeply, prompting him to urge me to spread the message that everyone deserves to feel valued.

Imagine if we all made it a point to demonstrate kindness and grace in our everyday lives. What if we used our own experiences to uplift others? What if we intentionally became “that” person who brings hope to those facing challenges? What if we offered love to those who don’t extend it to us?

A simple smile to a stranger or a word of encouragement can make a world of difference. We’ve all faced unkindness before, whether intentional or born from ignorance. Conversely, kindness and respect can heal wounds we didn’t even know we had.

I understand that many of us, whether dealing with our own struggles or caring for loved ones with challenges, may feel like we have little to give. Yet, if we take a moment to recall how it felt when someone showed us kindness, we may just uncover a reservoir of strength we didn’t know existed.

My son wants everyone to accept the kindness challenge. He believes that each person matters. I’m on board—will you join us?
