For the past dozen years, I’ve rarely had a moment to myself. Between the kids, the pets, and my endlessly active imagination, there’s always someone vying for my attention. But guess what? In just one week, all of that is about to change.
With the new school year approaching, my little ones will finally step into a classroom. Now, you might think this is a pretty typical milestone for parents—exciting, sure, but not earth-shattering. For me, though? It’s a total game-changer.
You see, I’ve been homeschooling for eight years, and we’ve never ventured into this territory before. Sure, they’ll be attending a school for homeschoolers (yep, that exists), which means they’ll spend just a couple of days a week in a classroom, still doing most of their learning at home. They’ll be among kids who also understand the joys of tackling schoolwork in princess costumes and with snorkels—yes, that’s happened more than once!
I’m thrilled for my kids—their excitement is infectious, and I know they’ll love this fresh experience. But let’s be honest; I’m equally stoked for myself. What will I do with all that quiet time? Hours—actual hours—of solitude await me! It feels like I’m about to rediscover a long-lost art.
Since I’ve already mapped out the kids’ meals for the next few weeks, I figured it was time to plan some lunches just for me. Here are my top five solo lunch ideas:
- Diner Delight
Imagine this: I could savor lunch at a diner without the need for crayons and coloring sheets! I can enjoy a meal in peace and even play on my phone without having to share it. No more kids’ menus to worry about!
- Home Cooking Heaven
Or, I could whip up something I actually enjoy at home—like roasted garlic brussels sprouts paired with zesty sauerkraut, gluten-free pumpernickel, and thin slices of roast beef with provolone. Oh, the glory of a well-made sandwich!
- Solo Picnic
Picture this: a peaceful park, a good book in hand, and the chance to actually read uninterrupted. Just me and my thoughts—what a concept!
- Pub Adventures
What if I treated myself to a trip to the pub? I could relax with some lettuce-wrapped lamb burgers and enjoy a side of steak fries while catching a random soccer game on the bar TV. A cold Sam Adams would be the cherry on top!
- Lunch in Bed
Finally, I could indulge in a cozy lunch in bed, perhaps finishing an entire episode of my favorite show while munching on Doritos and sipping Stewart’s Orange Creme soda. Sounds perfect, right?
These solo lunches as the kids head back to school are going to be absolutely heavenly. In summary, with kids heading off to school, I’m ready to embrace the freedom of solitary lunches. From dining out to enjoying leisurely meals at home, I’m looking forward to relishing every moment. Bring on the back-to-school lunches!
