Pacifiers Aren’t Just for Babies

As life swirls around me like a chaotic storm, I find myself asking, “Why?” It’s a question that’s embedded in our very nature. We humans are wired to gather the jumbled pieces of our experiences and make sense of them. Yet, no matter how many times I ponder this question, I realize that the answer often eludes me. The deeper meaning behind our circumstances can feel like trying to catch smoke with bare hands.

As the Bhagavad Gita wisely puts it, “You will never untangle the circumstances that brought you to this moment.” It’s during these times of uncertainty that many people turn to faith, religion, or even less healthy coping mechanisms. The fear of the unknown and the weight of a chaotic world can be overwhelming, leading us to seek anything that might lighten that load. I’ve certainly found myself saying, “Maybe it was meant to be,” or “It’s all in God’s hands.” And, let’s be honest, I’ve also thought, “Why not pour a drink?” These are all ways I’ve tried to soothe the confusing, often brutal pain that seems to multiply as the years pass.

Last week, my son Lucas handed over his last three pacifiers. It was clear he was done with them, and I didn’t feel the need to concoct a story to ease his transition away from something typically associated with “babies.” But why is it considered bad to seek comfort in something we’ve outgrown? We all crave something to help us navigate the sometimes scary shadows of life. I wouldn’t mind having a pacifier myself on tough days! Yet, Lucas’s decision to share his pacifiers came not from shame, but from a genuine desire to help others. He wanted to donate them to babies in the hospital—no reward expected, just the joy of giving. He’s a natural caregiver, a peacemaker, and knowing that fills my heart with warmth.

In summary, pacifiers might be seen as a baby’s tool for comfort, but the need for soothing and support is universal, regardless of age. Whether it’s a small gesture of kindness or a deeper exploration of family, we all seek ways to navigate life’s challenges.
