When Chris and Jamie Thompson welcomed their son, Max, into the world, they quickly discovered there was an issue with the shape of his head. At just two months old, a pediatrician diagnosed Max with craniosynostosis, a condition where the joints in a baby’s skull fuse too early, preventing the brain from developing properly and resulting in a misshapen head.
After exploring their options, the Thompsons opted for a less invasive surgery instead of a more drastic measure. Unfortunately, this meant Max would need to wear a helmet for at least 22 hours a day until he turned one. Not wanting their son to feel like just another kid in a plain helmet, Chris decided to add a little flair to the situation. He painted a series of helmets inspired by Star Wars, turning a necessary accessory into a fun tribute to a galaxy far, far away. Chris shared with Pop Sugar Moms, “If he has to wear a helmet, we might as well make it entertaining! It shifted the conversation from ‘What happened to your kid?’ to ‘Wow, cool helmet!’”
Check out some snapshots from Chris’s Instagram account showcasing Max’s stylish headgear.
By the time Max celebrated his first birthday, he was proudly helmet-free. While he won’t remember wearing the helmet, the photos will serve as a reminder of how his parents infused love and creativity into every moment of his early years. Now that’s what we call parenting with pizzazz!
