Pregnancy and C-Sections: A Journey of Discovery
When I found out I would be welcoming my first child through a c-section at 35 weeks due to placenta previa, I had mixed emotions. I knew vaginal delivery might not be an option, but I didn’t bother to prepare for the surgical side of things. I thought, “How tough could it be compared to pushing a baby out?” Spoiler: it’s not a walk in the park!
Sitting in the OB’s office, the news hit me like a ton of bricks. I was about to go into surgery, and I felt completely unprepared. In my mind, I envisioned a quick procedure where they’d roll me in, I’d lie there, and then voilà—baby in hand, looking radiant like Rachel from Friends. But, let’s set the record straight: this is major surgery! My husband even got a front-row seat to the action. If that doesn’t earn you some “me time” when the baby’s older, I don’t know what will.
If you suspect a c-section might be in your future, let my experience save you some anxiety. Here’s what I learned:
- Cold as Ice: The operating room is freezing, and the IV meds don’t help. I was shaking so much during my first c-section that I worried the anesthesiologist would accidentally miss his target with my spinal block. My body was shivering like a leaf in a hurricane!
- Not So Numb: You might think you’ll feel nothing, but that’s not entirely true. Sure, you won’t feel pain, but the intense pulling sensation as they extract your baby is something else. My OB’s warning of “slight pressure” was a major understatement. It felt like they were yanking a bowling ball out of my abdomen!
- Pain Meds Are Your Friends: Don’t be a hero—take the pain meds! Initially, I was all for them, but at about 28 hours post-surgery, I thought I’d skip them. Bad decision! Not only was I dealing with the pain from the surgery, but I also had cramping as my body adjusted post-delivery. Trust me, stay a football field ahead of the pain, not just one step.
- Laughter is Off the Table: Activities like laughing, sneezing, and even pooping become a challenge. You’ll be advised to hold a pillow over your incision, but let’s be real—it’s still going to hurt. When my husband made me laugh in the hospital, I produced a high-pitched snicker that had nurses checking if I was okay!
- Bathroom Breaks are a Battle: Think you had issues with your digestive system during pregnancy? Just wait! After my first c-section, I went an entire week without a bowel movement. I tried everything—fiber, hydration, you name it. It took me 50 minutes of straining to finally feel something, and I felt like an audience member at a terrible circus act. Stock up on some prune juice—it’s a lifesaver!
- Scar Sensation is a Myth: The area around your scar? Don’t expect to regain feeling anytime soon. Years later, I still experience itching that I can’t scratch. It’s like my skin is playing a cruel joke on me. The chances of getting those nerve endings back? About as good as Lindsay Lohan staying out of trouble!
Even with all these lessons, I chose to have another baby via c-section. Being informed helped calm my nerves. And yes, I definitely packed some prune juice in my hospital bag!
