Introducing a New Breed of Working Moms: The DIASOM

I can relate to a little bit of everything when it comes to the various types of working moms. I feel you, stay-at-home moms (SAHMs). I see you, working moms. And then there’s me, a Work-at-Home Mom (WAHM) of sorts. But honestly, these labels often feel limiting. From my own experiences and observations, I’d like to suggest a new category: the Do-It-All Sort of Mom (DIASOM).

The DIASOM is a mom who embodies aspects of various mom roles. Many DIASOMs, including myself, blend elements from each identity without fully committing to just one, much like a shopper who endlessly tries on outfits but never buys anything.

Here’s a glimpse into my life as a DIASOM:

I manage two kids and juggle three jobs that don’t quite add up to full-time hours. I teach writing classes online and on weekends, holding onto my love for education from my previous career as a teacher. I also teach yoga classes because, let’s be honest, yoga is my jam! After completing my teacher training in 2008, I’d hate to let that passion fade. Plus, I hold a part-time job in communications to stay in the loop and contribute a small amount to our household finances. When I find the time, I try my hand at writing.

Most days, I’m at home, so I volunteer at my kids’ school, tidy up the house, and whip up (or reheat) dinner. Picture me typing emails while kids cling to my legs, often dressed in yoga pants and a messy ponytail.

The Perks and Challenges of Being a DIASOM

Being a DIASOM has its perks. I’m rarely bored, and I can throw in interesting tidbits at dinner parties thanks to my diverse experiences. Yet, like all moms, I ponder who might be missing out as I spread myself thin across different commitments without diving deeply into any one area.

My mind is a whirlwind of questions:

  • Should I return to teaching and use my parenting insights to inspire the next generation?
  • Could I become a spiritual guru, dedicating myself to yoga and writing about its philosophy?
  • Should I buckle down and finish that novel I dream about?
  • Is it time to focus on my day job and build a career from it?
  • Or perhaps I should create a picture-perfect home with gourmet meals and meaningful conversations nightly? If I chose that route, I’d need to banish all electronic devices from my kids’ presence!

As a DIASOM, I can check off many boxes, but it often feels like I’m stuck in limbo, hesitant to put all my eggs in one basket, yet constantly questioning if I’m missing out on the big win by not fully committing.

Just like working moms who feel torn, or SAHMs defending their choices to use their education to nurture their children, we DIASOMs face our own challenges. Maybe someday I’ll take a plunge into one of my passions and see where it leads. Or perhaps I’ll keep spinning those plates, hoping they don’t all come crashing down!
