As a stay-at-home mom, I often find myself navigating the aisles of various stores, fulfilling my role as the family’s designated shopper. It’s my job to gather everything from groceries to clothes to personal care items. A day filled with multiple store visits? Not ideal! But if I can check everything off my list at Target for under $200, that’s a victory worth celebrating!
Over the years, I’ve become quite the keen observer of human behavior during my shopping excursions. Here are ten types of shoppers you’re likely to meet on your own adventures.
1. The Overwhelmed Mom
You’ll spot her struggling to push a double stroller while maneuvering a shopping cart. This multitasking marvel is often juggling a few little ones and trying to corral older kids who are blissfully ignoring her shouts from two aisles over. Spoiler alert: the 3-year-old probably needs a bathroom break!
2. The Husband on a Mission
If you see a man pacing nervously down the aisles, looking at a list, and muttering under his breath, he’s definitely shopping for his wife. He’s not about to risk picking the wrong item, and the thought of asking for help? Not happening.
3. The Engaging Toddler Parent
If you’re shopping during the day, you’ll likely encounter this cheerful parent who’s narrating their shopping trip like a live-action children’s show. “Ooooh! Look at the red circle! Yes, that’s a doggie!” While their enthusiasm is refreshing, it’s probably best to avoid trailing behind them unless you have time to spare.
4. The Lost Newbie
This shopper looks completely out of their element—glazed eyes, scanning the aisles as if they’re lost in a maze. They’re on the lookout for assistance, so if you happen to make eye contact, prepare for them to latch onto you like a toddler with a favorite toy.
5. The Social Butterfly
This person brings their own party wherever they go. They love chatting you up about everything from product selections to their last vacation, regardless of whether you’re interested. You might want to practice your “uh-huhs” for a quick escape.
6. The Blissful Escapee
Spot a woman with a latte, strolling leisurely? That’s the mom who has managed to carve out some alone time. She’s enjoying her shopping trip like a mini-vacation, happy to be away from the chaos of home, and maybe even contemplating a spontaneous manicure.
7. The Rushed Dasher
This shopper is on a mission—one item, no cart, and absolutely no time to waste. They’re darting around, choosing the shortest line with a palpable urgency. It’s a guarantee that whichever line they pick will be the slowest, leading to a symphony of sighs and huffs as they make their way to the exit.
8. The Allergy-Conscious Parent
This shopper has to meticulously read every label due to a recent food allergy diagnosis. You’ll find them comparing ingredients and looking up terms like “xanthan gum” on their phone. If they have kids with them, the experience is even more stressful as they juggle bribes and distractions.
9. The In-Store Narrator
“Okay, aisle three… coffee… do I need coffee?” This shopper talks through their thought process out loud, making them easy to identify. They’ll probably start reflecting on their vitamin D intake mid-shop, because multitasking is life!
10. The Coupon Queen
This shopper has it down to a science. Armed with apps, flyers, and a collection of coupons, they know how to save big. But if you’re in a hurry, be prepared for a lengthy checkout process—it takes time to be this good!
I can admit to being a combination of these shoppers at various points in my life (#GuiltyAsCharged). Maybe you’ve spotted yourself in one of these roles too? As I sip my latte and dodge the social butterfly, I’m curious about who else I’ve missed!
