In vs. out. Up vs. down. Boys vs. girls. Tasty bacon vs. sad, bitter vegetarians.

At an adult birthday bash one night, a perfect example of this disparity emerged during a chat among the ladies. Surrounded by a semi-circle of women, fueled by a few too many drinks, we were lamenting the fact that we should be chugging about 57 liters of water daily, but really, isn’t it much more fun to sip on delicious cocktails instead? (When tipsy, every word suddenly has an extra 14 syllables.) The guys nearby were completely baffled.

“Water is amazing! It keeps you alive! It makes your curves pop under clothing! It even ensures everything down there stays fresh!”

As I paused to think about it, I realized why we were on such different wavelengths regarding this First World dilemma. Every day, women are hit with messages like:

  • “Hey, dealing with adult acne? Your skin needs more water!”
  • “Hey, snacking too much? A sip of water can help curb that!”
  • “Hey, got a headache? Meet your new best friend, Dr. Water!”
  • “Hey, HEY, is something else bothering you? The answer is always WATER!”

Water! Drink it by the liter! Forget food! Forget your worries! Buy that trendy $32 water bottle that every fashion blogger swears by, and fill it up until you’re running to the bathroom every five minutes, feeling like your bladder is about to burst!

Let’s spice it up a bit! Infuse it with fruit, try a SodaStream, drink it warm, or even toss in some cayenne pepper and honey. You’ll feel fabulous while practically gnawing on your own knuckles!

But wait, what? I didn’t catch that over the sound of my stomach begging for relief as it battles an entire ocean of liquid. Can you remind me again when I’m back from my 76th bathroom trip of the day?

In essence, women diligently drink their recommended eight cups of water daily, all in the name of living our best lives. Meanwhile, guys drink water because they’re just thirsty and happen to be near a tap.

Two completely different worlds.

In conclusion, the water debate is just another quirky aspect of the divide between how men and women approach seemingly simple things in life. While we’re overanalyzing hydration, the guys are simply guzzling what they need.
