Life Lessons from the Junk Drawer: A New Perspective

Ah, the junk drawer—an area of our homes that we promise will always be neat and tidy. We tell ourselves that it will be a space we can gracefully open and close, proudly recalling its contents at any given moment. Those are our intentions, right? But life, as it often does, has a way of derailing our best-laid plans. Before you know it, that drawer transforms into a chaotic beast, collecting everything from paperclips to takeout menus.

Take, for instance, a menu from the local Chinese spot, which finds its way nestled among its fellow takeout companions—essential items for those long days when you stumble home from work, the kids are bickering, and cooking is the last thing on your mind. Toss in a handful of $5 off coupons for your next Target run, and of course, those “Over the Hill” birthday cards from every friend, family member, and acquaintance. Receipts, old nail polish, mismatched shoelaces, phone chargers, Legos, scissors, hair clips, tape, and postcards—all are welcomed into this drawer, while the exit door remains firmly closed.

Recently, I decided it was time to tackle my junk drawer. I dumped its contents onto the living room floor, thinking I could sort through it while catching up on my favorite TV shows. As sitcoms played and the news rolled, I found myself knee-deep in nostalgia, sorting through decades of my life.

There was a wedding shower invitation from 2012, one that I forgot to RSVP to. My friend had sent it the old-fashioned way, and I now felt a pang of guilt for not responding. When did life get so busy that I lost track of these little social niceties?

As I sifted through the pile, I stumbled upon a collection of photos from my 35mm camera days. The thrill of opening that envelope filled with images I had taken was palpable. Flipping through them, I was reminded of my younger self, before the wrinkles made their debut during my daughter’s middle school years.

Tucked away under a deck of cards was a lovely wooden fan, a thoughtful gift from a friend going through her own hot flashes. I had once scoffed at the idea of needing it—how wrong I was! I found myself fanning away as I delved deeper into my memories.

The tape measure brought back memories of a much-anticipated couch purchase, which was derailed when our toilets decided to overflow instead. We eventually ended up with new seating, but not exactly the ones I had envisioned.

Then there was my address book, worn and weathered. Names and numbers jotted down in a confused mess. This little book had been my lifeline for years, a trusty companion that never lost a number due to a dead battery—take that, modern technology!

I did manage to toss a few things—faded scraps of paper with writing so tiny that not even my reading glasses could decipher them, cereal coupons from a bygone era, and floppy disks that were nothing but relics of the past.

Yet, most items were ones I cherished, which is why they made their way into the drawer in the first place. So, I meticulously rearranged everything, ensuring the drawer could close completely. While it was satisfying to have a tidy space, the experience also sparked some inspiration. I found a blank sheet of paper and jotted down a to-do list: 1) reconnect with old pals, 2) send birthday cards instead of e-greetings, 3) print out those iPhone photos, 4) finally buy that couch, and 5) find an anti-aging cream that actually works. I promised myself I would start on this list tomorrow, but I faced a dilemma—where to keep this crucial piece of paper?

What better place than the very drawer that started it all? After all, none of this is junk—it’s a collection of my life. From now on, it’s officially my “Life Drawer,” and I will strive to keep it organized. Or at least give it my best shot!
