When I imagined our family getaway to a quaint resort by a lake in Minnesota, I pictured serene sunsets, quality family time on the beach, and roasting s’mores around the campfire. What I certainly didn’t foresee was finding myself on a banana taxi.
For those unfamiliar, a banana taxi is basically a bright yellow inflatable raft designed to hold 12 thrill-seekers as it’s pulled through the water by a speedy ski boat. Riders straddle the tube and hold onto a small rope in front of them. Little did I know that this banana taxi experience would impart some valuable life lessons, remind me of a few I often overlook, and become a cherished family memory.
1. Be the Fun Parent Sometimes
“You have to ride the banana taxi too! Come on! It’ll be a blast!” my preteen daughter urged. I hesitated, thinking, “Aren’t parents supposed to avoid such things?” Then I overheard another dad mention he had joined in last year. However, he had opted out of the ride this time, leaving my husband and me sandwiched between a gaggle of tweens and teens. To my surprise, my daughter was thrilled. She insisted that we were fun, and that’s what family vacations are all about.
2. Embrace the Wild Side
We had two ride choices: mild or wild. Naturally, the mild ride was fully booked, and we were thrust into the wild adventure. As I signed the waiver, I jokingly expressed my doubts about belonging on such a ride. The young staffer’s mischievous laugh did little to ease my mind. Turns out, the boat driver took “wild” quite literally, speeding across the water and launching us into the air. It was exhilarating, to say the least!
3. Hold On Tight
Life—and banana taxi rides—can get bumpy. In those moments, all you can do is hang on for dear life. Sometimes you might lose your grip and fall off, but getting back on is part of the adventure. It’s okay to stumble; what matters is your resolve to get back in the game.
4. Savor the Experience
I underestimated how long the ride would last. While I feared I might end up as a cautionary tale of “the unfortunate banana taxi accident,” I realized that such a headline would be almost legendary. Once I settled into the thrill, I found myself enjoying every minute. Sure, I was worried about my life and dignity, but embracing the chaos made it much more fun.
5. Trust Your Kids
When my daughter flew off during the ride, I looked back, worried. But she surfaced with a goofy grin, explaining later, “Oh, the fall was awesome! I was just pulling my bathing suit up! Can’t get back on half-naked!” Her ability to laugh off the situation was impressive—definitely more composed than I would have been!
6. Kindness Exists
When we finally returned to shore, I realized my husband and I hadn’t fallen off at all! It was a miracle! Or perhaps the driver had taken pity on us, making sure we stayed intact. I was grateful, even though the ride was still a wild adventure. My daughter had a second go at the banana taxi the next day, but returned fuming because the driver took it easy and no one fell off. “It was nothing like yesterday! Yesterday was wild and awesome!” she exclaimed.
7. All Good Things Must End
Eventually, the wildness will taper off. Your child’s enthusiasm for you to join in the fun will fade, and surprisingly, that might leave you feeling a bit wistful. At least I can look back and chuckle about the entire experience, and the double meaning behind “banana taxi,” for years to come.
