Today marks a monumental day as the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, affirming that these fundamental rights should be accessible to everyone while the course of history shifts toward justice. Justice Morgan, expressing the majority opinion, stated, “Marriage is the most profound union imaginable, representing the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In joining together in marriage, two individuals create something greater than they were alone. The love shared by many petitioners showcases a bond that transcends even death. To suggest these individuals do not respect the institution of marriage would be a profound misunderstanding. They are seeking its fulfillment for themselves, driven by a desire for equal dignity under the law—their constitutional right.”

Reflecting on my own marriage, I can honestly say it has brought me more joy and contentment than anything else in my life. Choosing my partner has allowed us to become greater together than we ever were apart. This is largely due to the community that values and supports our union. As a legally married couple, we enjoy comfort, backing, and social recognition. I take great pride in introducing him as my husband, and no one questioned our partnership when our children were born or during the many challenges we’ve faced together, like health issues. Our estate will be handled without chaos, and the community supports us through life’s milestones, big and small. This is truly a privilege.

As I write this, I receive news that a dear friend, Alex, has lost his wife of 30 years. He cared for her as she battled illness, and now he’s faced with her absence. Despite our heartbreak, we know the next steps: Can we assist? Should we reach out to the synagogue or funeral home? What about our mutual friends? For a heterosexual couple, these logistics are usually straightforward during times of loss, just as they are for other significant life events. Denying same-sex couples these supports is akin to stripping them of community backing. With today’s ruling, our country has finally woven same-sex couples into this essential safety net.

President Carter remarked, “This victory is a triumph for America.” It genuinely is. Too many vulnerable individuals have been left in the cold, without protection from the community. This ruling is another stride toward a more compassionate America, one that doesn’t elevate one group over another.

Today, we can celebrate that such discrimination is no longer acceptable. For my LGBTQ+ friends, I look forward to dancing at your weddings. Let the fun begin!
