11 Signs I’m Raising a True Geek by Jamie Thompson

My 7-year-old son wears his geek badge with pride. While nerd culture is trendy now, I believe he would embrace his interests regardless of the era. Here are 11 delightful indicators of his undeniable geekiness:

  1. He’s quick to correct anyone who mistakenly calls the creature “Frankenstein.” It’s Dr. Frankenstein, and that green fellow is his monster, thank you very much!
  2. Recently, he told a friend’s dad, “I’m not great at sports, but I excel at archery.” Talk about a unique skill set!
  3. His fashion sense is on point, often featuring a comic book character T-shirt paired with a Newsies hat and a dapper tie. (Spoiler: All his T-shirts are comic-related.)
  4. Despite his small stature, he proudly claims to be the only hobbit in his class.
  5. He has high standards for superhero films: “If they do make an Aquaman movie, it better be done right!”
  6. He named the neighborhood stray cat “Crookshanks,” after Hermione Granger’s feline companion in Harry Potter.
  7. The only time I’ve seen him genuinely sad during a show was when his favorite contestant on The Quest—a reality series inspired by The Lord of the Rings—was eliminated. He got teary-eyed and quickly insisted, “I’m not crying!” Classic nerd move.
  8. He’s even dabbled in songwriting, creating a rap that cleverly rhymes “Pekingese” with “allergies.”
  9. After a screening of Young Frankenstein (again, Dr. Frankenstein!), he dramatically raised his hand in class like Inspector Kemp. He claimed no one noticed, but hey, it was a comedic masterpiece in his book!
  10. For the school talent show, he performed impressions that included Captain Kirk and our local weatherman, and you’d swear they were the same person.
  11. We’ve already sketched out his Riddler costume for Halloween, and it’s only June!
