As I find myself in my mid-40s, “cool” feels like a subjective term. Just the other day, while tackling the monumental task of reorganizing my silverware drawer (trust me, we’ll get to the cool stuff soon), I caught myself belting out an alt-rock tune that had been stuck in my head for days. Yes, I know every word. So, here’s why I can confidently say I’m cooler now than I was ten years ago:

  1. I know all the lyrics to every Imagine Dragons song.
A decade back, my music library was filled with catchy tunes from The Wiggles. Sure, I still have a soft spot for the silly songs, but having teenagers means my car is no longer a sanctuary for children’s songs about fruit or animals.
  2. I’ve mastered the art of what not to wear.
There was a phase in my 30s when fashion choices were a minefield. My teenage daughters have since become my personal style consultants, happily letting me know when I hit the mark or when I look like I’m trying way too hard. Honestly, how do moms without teenage daughters even survive the fashion world?
  3. Dangle earrings? Yes, please!
Being a child of the ’80s, I’ve always been a fan of bold earrings. However, during the toddler years, I had to hide them to avoid any jewelry-related disasters. Now, I can rock them without a care (though I still avoid anything too flashy, thanks to my fashion-savvy girls).
  4. I indulge in ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and binge-watch ‘Mad Men.’
I might have caught a glimpse of Game of Thrones, but with kids under 15 around, that adventure is on hold. I’ve officially graduated from kids’ shows like Phineas and Ferb. Just the other day, a young friend mentioned Umizoomi, and I was blissfully clueless—just me and my dangle earrings, enjoying my adult viewing choices.
  5. My bras are now flap-free.
The only way in is to completely take them off, which is a breeze now that I’m no longer nursing.
  6. No more spit-up stains on my clothes.
    Hallelujah!
  7. I’m up-to-date with the latest bestsellers.
With all the time spent waiting in my car for school pickups or practices, I’ve found plenty of time to dive into books. And yes, these books are picture-free.
  8. My favorite styles are back in vogue.
High-waisted pants? Check! Leggings? Done that! Off-the-shoulder sweaters? You bet! It’s like my wardrobe has made a triumphant return.

It’s clear: I’m definitely cooler now than I was a decade ago. In fact, I was also cooler in my 30s compared to my 20s. And even though I rocked a fierce tan and big hair in my teens, I was merely warming up to “cool.” So, much like a fine wine, I just keep improving with age. I can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store!

Life truly does get better with age!
