You know it’s time to rethink your dating life when you find yourself yearning for your furry friend while on a date. If I’d rather cuddle with my drooly pup than endure another awkward moment with Mr. Overly-Gelled Hair, it’s definitely time to hit the road. Don’t get me wrong; I’m all about love and romance. But sometimes, my love for my dog just wins out.

Believe it or not, I wasn’t always a die-hard dog person. But after a tough divorce and a promise to my kids that they could have a pet, I took a leap of faith. We wanted to choose a breed that wouldn’t require a lifetime commitment—because let’s be real, the last thing I needed was a reminder of my failed marriage. After some research, we settled on a St. Bernard.

In January 2009, we welcomed our big fur baby, Sir Waggington, into our lives. He had all the classic puppy antics: chewing on everything from shoes to furniture and barreling through the front door like a freight train. In just six months, he packed on a staggering 106 pounds! My walks turned into a game of chase, where I’d sprint after him through parks and even a golf course.

After nine months of puppy chaos, I hit a wall. With my marriage crumbling, the kids feeling the strain, and drool coating every surface of my home, I felt overwhelmed. I even had 17 lint rollers on hand! I considered giving him up, but the shelters urged me to stick it out and bond with him. Eventually, he learned a few commands—okay, maybe just “sit” was mastered—but as the distractions faded, Sir Waggington and I formed a tight bond.

Sure, he’s got his quirks—like guzzling from the toilet, snoring like a chainsaw, and hiding snacks everywhere (I’ve found hot dogs in the oddest places). But the love he gives is unconditional.

He listens to my endless ramblings without interrupting, gets excited every time he hears my voice, and never breaks a promise. He’s not like that guy who says he’ll help clean the garage and then ends up binge-watching a show instead. And when I’m feeling a bit down about my waistline or dinner is late, he doesn’t judge. We never fight about politics or who’s hogging the remote.

My divorce brought on a whirlwind of change. My kids needed me to help them navigate their feelings, and I had to reassess my friendships and living situation. But through it all, Sir Waggington was my steadfast companion. No matter the situation—whether I’m feeling joyful or lonely, or even when the boys are away—he’s always by my side.

It’s no coincidence that my kids chose a St. Bernard. These gentle giants are known for their instinctual ability to sense danger and rescue those in need. Sir Waggington came into my life just when I needed him most, reminding me that loneliness is a choice. A fulfilling life can take many forms, and while others might have their own ideas of happiness, I’ve found mine in the companionship of my loyal pup.

In summary, having a devoted dog can offer more comfort and joy than a disappointing date. They provide unconditional love, companionship, and a sense of stability during life’s ups and downs.
